BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win over St. Peter's University in its opening match of the Towson Invitational on Friday night. The Tigers improved to 4-0 on the season as they have not dropped a set so far this season.
Towson held St. Peter's to just nine points in each of the first two sets (25-9, 25-9, 25-16). It was the first time since 2010, the Tigers held an opponent to under 10 points in a pair of sets that were played to 25. Towson had 17 players see time in at least one set in the match.
"It was really important for our young kids to play and get experience when they can," said Tiger Head Coach
Don Metil. "It was important tonight and will be all year for players like
Saitaua Iosia,
Victoria Williams and
Haley Pa'akaula (combined 33 kills and just two hitting errors) to perform like they did tonight. If we stay healthy, we are better than we were last year and I think people like
Barbara Lopez are going to be important for us all year long."
The first set saw the two teams battle early as they were tied at 5-5. St. Peter's took a 6-5 lead on a kill from
Lexandra Wirth. The Tigers then manufactured a 6-0 run to take an 11-6 lead in the set. The two squads traded points before a 12-0 run gave Towson a 24-8 lead in the set.
