BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team battled for a 3-1 win over Coppin State in its first match on day two of the Towson Invitational Saturday. Led by
Candace Steadman's career-high 11 kills, the Tigers had four players record double digit kills and improved to 5-0.
Towson won the match with set scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-16.
Tied at 12-12 in the first set, the Tigers used a 7-1 run to open up a 19-13 lead.
Saitaua Iosia had a pair of service aces during that run to lead the Tigers. Coppin State cut the Tiger lead to 19-15 on a bad set by the Tigers. Towson then scored six of the next seven points to claim the 25-16 set win.
Capri Tirrell's service ace closed out the set for the Tigers.
Coppin State hit .323 to the Tigers' .211 in the second set. The two teams battled through eight ties and four lead changes before the Eagles edged out the Tigers for a 25-21 set win. That tied the match at 1-1.
Cindy Okpegbue had five kills while
Chelsee Sauni dished out 10 assists.
In the third set, Iosia's third service ace of the match helped Towson open up a 10-7 advantage. The Tigers pushed their lead to 15-11 on a kill from
Haley Pa'akaula. Another Pa'akaula kill made it 19-13 in the set. Coppin State cut the Tiger lead to three, 19-16 on a service ace from
Gabrielle Otero. A kill from Steadman put Towson on top 23-17. Towson eventually closed out the set on a kill from Pa'akaula. The 25-18 set win gave Towson a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Tigers came out firing to start the fourth set as a block from Steadman and
Barbara Lopez gave Towson a 9-1 lead. A block from
Victoria Williams and
Lindsay Flaherty pushed the Tiger advantage to 15-3. A service ace from Pa'akaula gave Towson a 20-7 edge in the set. The two teams continued to battle as a service ace from
Aimee Schubert and a kill from Williams closed out the 25-16 set victory and a win in the match for the Tigers.
Pa'akaula led the Tigers with 15 kills, one off her career-high and nine digs. Steadman had four blocks to go with her career-high in kills. Williams contributed 11 kills while Iosia posted 10 kills and 16 digs for the "double-double." Lopez had a season-high 24 assists while Schubert contributed 23 helpers.
Paige Sekerak finished with 12 digs.
Okpegbue led Coppin State with a match-high 16 kills while Otero had 16 digs.
Towson wraps up play in the Towson Invitational when it hosts La Salle at 6 p.m. in SECU Arena.
