NEWARK, Del. – Delaware used a 7-0 run over the final 3:12 of overtime to erase a two-point deficit and hand Towson a 67-64, overtime loss Wednesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Tigers (8-10, 1-4 CAA) took a two-point lead with 3:13 left as
Alex Gavrilovic knocked down a pair of free throws. The Blue Hens were able to tie the game as they made four-straight free throws with under two minutes left.
Both teams did not score for the next minute before Kory Holden found Marvin King-Davis under the rim for the dunk, and the two-point lead with 1:08 left. Towson had its layup blocked on the next possession and the Tigers were forced to foul. Holden knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with 34 seconds left to keep it a one-possession game.
The Tigers were forced to call a timeout on their final possession. With under 10 seconds to go,
Timajh Parker-Rivera was forced to pick up a loose ball and heave a desperation three-pointer that bounced off the rim.
Towson held a one-point lead with 4:47 remaining in regulation when
Mike Morsell knocked down a three-pointer in the corner. After a pair of Blue Hen free throws,
Four McGlynn took his turn at knocking down a long ball to give the Tigers a five-point advantage with 3:08 showing on the clock.
Delaware (3-13, 2-3 CAA) got back into the game at the foul line as they went the final 4:47 without a field goal. Trailing by four, Cazmon Hayes was fouled on a three-point attempt and knocked down all three free throws. After a Tigers miss, the Blue Hens knocked down one-of-two free throws to tie the game with 22 seconds left.
On their final possession, the Tigers drove down the lane, but the shot was blocked at the rim.
The two teams struggled from the field in the early-part of the first half. Towson would open up as much as a seven-point lead, before Delaware made 3-of-4 free throws in the final seconds to take a two-point advantage. But, freshman
Byron Hawkins gave the Tigers the lead at the half as his banked in a three-pointer from just beyond half court to give the Tigers the 27-25 lead at the half.
Davis led the Tigers with his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkins finished with 12 points and McGlynn 11. Parker-Rivera added five points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Towson returns to the court Saturday afternoon as they welcome William & Mary to SECU Arena. Tipoff is set for 12:06 p.m. and can be seen live on Comcast SportsNet.
