Tigers Earn First Ever Win Over College of Charleston, 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four players posted double-double performances to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-1 win at College of Charleston in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (19-3, 6-2 CAA) earned their first win over the Cougars in six tries.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • College of Charleston opened up a 5-0 lead in the first set and forced the Tigers to use an early timeout. Towson scored 17 of the next 28 points and took a 17-16 advantage. That included a 5-0 run that gave the visitors a lead for the first time in the match. Sophomore Julymar Otero had a pair of kills during that scoring spurt. The two teams traded points before a Krissy Mummey kill gave the Cougars a 23-21 edge. Towson got a kill from junior Jessica Lewis but the Cougars had set point, 24-22 following a kill from Kayla Tronick. Towson responded with a 6-2 run to secure a 28-26 set win. Junior Lindsay Flaherty and freshman Jocelyn Kuilan each had a kill and a block assist during that final run.
  • Towson hit .426 while College of Charleston posted a .340 hitting percentage. Kuilan hit .778 with seven kills and no errors on nine attempts in the set.
  • In the second set with the scored at 10-10, College of Charleston used a 6-3 run to take a 16-13 advantage. Melissa Morello had a pair of kills during that stretch. Towson scored five of the next eight points and pulled to within one, 19-18. Kuilan had a kill and a service ace for the Tigers during that run. College of Charleston used a 6-2 run to secure a 25-20 second set win and tie the match at 1-1. Tronick had three kills and a block during that key stretch.
  • College of Charleston hit .361 to Towson's .229 hitting percentage in the set. Morello had six kills and two digs during the set for the Cougars.
  • College of Charleston led 6-3 in the third set before the Tigers used an 8-1 run to take an 11-7 lead. Redshirt freshman Anna Holehouse had a service ace during that key stretch. A kill from Flaherty extended the Tiger advantage to 15-10 and led to a College of Charleston timeout. A kill from Lewis gave the Tigers a 20-17 edge in the set. College of Charleston scored four of the next five points and tied the set at 21-21. Towson used a 4-1 run of its own to seal a 25-22 set win. Flaherty and Otero's block closed out the set and helped the Tigers take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Towson hit .268 while the Cougars posted a .227 hitting percentage. Senior Kyana Miller had four assists and four digs in the set.
  • Back-to-back kills from Morello gave the Cougars a 9-6 lead in the fourth set and led to a Towson timeout. After the break, the Tigers used a 6-1 run to take a 12-10 advantage. Senior Haley Pa'akaula had a pair of kills and a solo block during that scoring stretch. A service ace from Holehouse gave Towson a 19-17 lead but the Cougars battled back to tie the set at 19-19. A 5-0 run that included a service ace from redshirt senior Aimee Schubert gave Towson a 24-19 lead. College of Charleston scored three straight points to pull the home team to within two, 24-22. However a Pa'akaula kill on the next play secured a 25-22 set win for the Tigers and victory in the match.
  • Pa'akaula had four kills, three digs and two blocks for the Tigers during the deciding set.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson hits the halfway point of the CAA schedule with a 6-2 conference record and tied for second place in the standings.
  • Pa'akaula, Lewis, Schubert and Miller all posted double-double performances in the win. It is the second time this season those four players have posted a double-double in the same match. Pa'akaula had 13 kills and 14 digs for her second straight double-double and 11th of the season. Lewis contributed 11 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Schubert had 26 assists and 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the year while Miller had 21 assists and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the year.
  • Holehouse finished with a team-high 18 digs which gives her 406 digs for the season. It is the 16th time in program history a player has recorded 400 or more digs in a single-season.
  • Kuilan had a team-high 15 kills in the match.

The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 as they welcome Delaware to SECU Arena for a 7 p.m. match. That will be the first of five straight home matches for the Tigers.
