Tigers Block Their Way to 3-1 Win at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University volleyball team recorded a season-high 11.5 team blocks en route to a 3-1 victory at William & Mary on Friday evening in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Junior Lindsay Flaherty led the way with a career-high nine blocks in the Tigers' (15-2, 2-1 CAA) win.

THE BASICS
Towson 3, William & Mary 1
Kaplan Arena, Williamsburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first play of the first set provided a milestone for one Tiger. Redshirt senior Aimee Schubert assisted on senior Haley Pa'akaula's kill. That gave Schubert 1,500 career assists at Towson. A kill from redshirt junior Candace Steadman gave Towson a 10-7 lead. An attack error by the Tribe (7-9, 1-2 CAA) extended the visitors' advantage to 17-11 and forced William & Mary to call timeout. The two teams went back-and-forth before a kill from freshman Jocelyn Kuilan gave Towson a 25-17 first set win.
  • Towson hit .302 in the first set as Steadman had five kills and no errors on seven attempts (.714).
  • The Tigers opened up an 8-1 lead in the second set and William & Mary was forced to use an early timeout. Flaherty had three blocks for the Tigers during that early stretch. The two teams battled as William & Mary pulled to within two, 13-11 and Towson called timeout. The Tigers responded out of the timeout, scoring seven of the next 11 points in the set and extended their lead to 20-15. Pa'akaula had a pair of kills during that run. The two teams traded points before once again a Kuilan kill sealed a Towson set win, 25-18. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Towson hit .256 to William & Mary's .143 clip in the set. Flaherty had five blocks while junior Jessica Lewis added four kills.
  • The third set was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams battled through seven ties and four lead changes. Towson trailed by as many as six points, 21-15 before rallying to tie the set at 23-23. That 7-2 run by the Tigers was highlighted by a pair of service aces from Schubert. A kill from Katie Kemp eventually gave the Tribe a 29-27 set win and forced the match to a fourth set.
  • William & Mary hit .256 in the set while the Tigers hit .211. Michelle Heath and Dessi Koleva each had four kills and three digs in the set.
  • The Tigers once again got off to a quick start in the fourth set, opening up an 8-2 lead as William & Mary called timeout. A block from Pa'akaula, Flaherty and sophomore Julymar Otero gave Towson a 15-6 advantage. A 3-0 run on kills from Otero, Flaherty and Kuilan gave Towson an 18-10 lead. The two teams traded points before a kill from Pa'akaula sealed a 25-19 set win for the Tigers and a victory in the match.
  • Otero had two kills and two blocks in the fourth set while Pa'akaula contributed two kills and four digs.

QUOTABLE
  • "Candace did a good job in her first match back (nine kills, two blocks after missing eight matches)," said Towson head coach Don Metil. "We need to continue to get reps in the practice gym between our middles and setters to be a little more efficient. Our serve receive was solid for three of the four sets. It's nice to get another road win in the conference as we look to complete this long road trip away from SECU."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Schubert finished the match with 29 assists and 14 digs for her fifth straight double-double and sixth of the season.
  • Senior Kyana Miller contributed 18 assists and 11 digs for her second straight double-double and fourth of the year.
  • Towson had a season-high 11.5 team blocks in the match and is now 3-0 on the year when it posts 10 or more team blocks in a match. Six Tigers recorded at least one block in the match and that group was led by Flaherty, who had a career-high nine.

The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Elon for a 2 p.m. match.
