Tigers Top Elon in Season Finale on Senior's Goal

TOWSON, Md. – If you're going to play the final game of your career, you may as well score the game-winning goal while you're at it.

Senior Vasthy Delgado blasted home the game-winning marker in the 67th minute to give the Towson University women's soccer a 1-0 win in the season finale over Elon University.

With its Sunday win at the Tiger Soccer Complex, Towson eliminated the Phoenix from qualifying from the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament.

How it Happened
  • The Phoenix (9-7-2, 1-6-1 CAA) controlled possession early in the game, taking six shots and earning three corner kicks in the first 23 minutes before Towson (6-7-4, 1-6-2 CAA) got its first shot of the game. Of those six shots, however, two were on goal. Taylor Sebolao made the first of her three saves in the 16th minute while a defender cleared a ball off the line before it could cross.
  • The Tigers got a good chance on offense on a header from Marissa Green, but she was whistled offsides on the play in the fourth minute.
  • Towson got its first shot of the day from sophomore midfielder Maddie Bove in the 27th minute, one of her four shots of the afternoon.
  • After Bove's header, Elon got another three shots in the first half while Towson attempted another three, with Natalia Pinkney getting her attempt on frame.
  • Both teams traded chances early in the second half before Towson sustained pressure in the Phoenix end for a two minute burst. In that span from the 56th minute to the 58th, the Tigers ripped off four shots, two of which were blocked and another two from Bove's head went just over the cross bar. Emily Marshal and Vasthy Delgado sent in two corners during that stretch as well.
  • Taking the ball down field, Delgado dribbled past several defenders before finding a good look at the goal in the 67th minute. The senior did not waste the chance and sent home a blast to the left post, beating Phoenix keeper Taylor Mohr to the left post. That goal stood up as the game-winner, the first such goal in Delgado's career.
  • Six minutes later, Elon had a spurt of possession as well, taking three corner kicks, including two Sebolao was forced to punch over the bar before the defense cleared on the third attempt.
  • Towson continued to pressure Elon late in the game, taking four shots in the final eight minutes while also taking a late corner in the 89th minute.
  • The Tiger defense, which featured three of the four seniors, did not allow an Elon goal over the final 12 minutes of the contest.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot Elon 19-16, with both teams putting four chances on goal. Phoenix keeper Mohr made three saves. The Tigers took 15 of their shots in the second half, limiting Elon to just seven in the final 45 minutes.
  • Elon took eight corners on the day while Towson sailed in a trio of corners.
  • Towson finished the 2015 campaign with a 3-3-2 overall record at the Tiger Soccer Complex this season, the first time the team was .500 or better at home since going 5-3-0 in 2011.
  • Prior to the game, four seniors, Delgado, Nicole Nicholas, Hollie Garber and Erin Kelly were honored with their families. The four seniors combined for 245 games played, including 75 by Nicholas. Her appearances rank tied for sixth-most in program history.
  • A junior, Sebolao finished her season with 118 saves, which ranks all-time in program history for a single season. Her goals against average of 1.23 is tied for ninth-best in a single season with Erin Quinn last season. Sebolo's 1760 minutes in 2015 ranks fifth for a single season.

Senior Defender Vasthy Delgado
On improving from Friday to Sunday
I think just the energy. Everyone was just so hyped and so excited for today that we fed off of that. Friday we came out pretty strong but today the energy was much improved from Friday.

On taking her game-winning shot
I just wanted it to get on frame. I didn't want it to go out. I was so excited that it went in.

On going out as a senior with a win
I'm so happy and it couldn't have been a better Senior Day.

Towson Head Coach Greg Paynter
On the resiliency of the team after CAA play
I think it shows, and it's been evident all season that we have the fight in us and we don't give up. We've come back in so many games. I think the leadership of this team and those three seniors in the back, Erin Kelly, Vasthy Delgado and Nicole Nicholas, did a good job of limiting teams taking easy opportunities for the most part. Just a great result from that senior group to put in the minutes they did and I think Hollie Garber played up top today for 75 or 80 minutes.

On finishing with a win
I'm happy for everybody. It's not just the seniors because everybody wins today. For the season to be over and all go out on a positive note and feel good about ourselves because we have played really good soccer this year, we just haven't gotten some of the results. I'm obviously pleased for the seniors that they get to have their last memory be something positive. But for this whole team, it's a great way to go into the offseason.
