NEWARK, Del. – A goal in the middle of the second half pulled the Towson women's soccer team level with host Delaware Sunday afternoon. Tiger defender
Vasthy Delgado knocked home the tying goal in the 66th minute at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium during the key Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matchup.
How It Happened- Delaware (5-6-2, 0-2-2 CAA) controlled the pace early, ripping off four shots and getting three corner kicks in the opening 15 minutes.
- The Tigers (6-4-3, 0-2-1 CAA) did not get a shot attempt until the 24th minute when McKenzie McCaull took an attempt that went wide of the goal mouth.
- Delaware scored on a miscue play from the Tigers. Towson keeper Taylor Sebolao played a clearing ball out that bounced off a teammate and fell at the feet of Delaware's Carolyn Seltzer. The Blue Hen took advantage of the chance and put her shot on frame while Sebolao was out of position.
- The goal settled the Tigers down as Towson limited Delaware to just two more shots in the next 20 minutes. Delaware maintained its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
- Out of the break, it was Towson's turn to put the pressure on Delaware. Towson took four shots in a 10-minute stretch, with the fourth coming from Delgado's foot to tie the game. The senior defender ripped a shot from 20-yards out and snuck the attempt over Delaware keeper Kelsey O'Donnell's head in the 66th minute.
- The Tigers did not get another shot in the remaining minutes of regulation, but the Hens took another four, but none were threatening and were either wide or high.
- Sebolao was busy early in extra time, making two of her seven saves in the first five minutes of overtime. Tiger Caitlin Oswald took one chance in the first overtime, but was stymied by O'Donnell in the 97th minute.
- Once again, Sebolao was busy in overtime, stopping another pair of Blue Hen attempts, while another Delaware shot was blocked by a defender before reaching the goal. The Tigers did not get a shot off in the second overtime.
Behind the Numbers- Sunday's 1-1 draw marks the first time the Tigers and Hens played to a tie since a 1-1 draw in Towson during the 2005 season. It was the first time in series history the teams tied in Newark, Delaware.
- The Tigers remain unbeaten in extra-time games, moving to a 1-0-3 mark. It was Towson's first road game of the season that needed extra time.
- Towson picks up one point in the CAA standings while halting a two-game skid in league play.
Towson Head Coach Greg PaynterDelaware had control the whole first half of the game. At halftime we made a decision to change our system and formation to move some people around. Vasthy (Delgado) moved to the midfield and that made a big difference. We made the assessment that we could dribble at Delaware.
On the pace of the gameDuring a 25 minute stretch we had the run of play in the second half. I thought we could break through but ran out of energy and Delaware came back at us late in the second half. It was a game of highs and lows. We held on at the end and got a point on the road.
On going deep into the benchIt was the second game of the weekend and we needed some depth.
Erin Kelly went out in the second half, which got
Alexis Toles in early in that half. It's a game of attrition and we needed all the depth we could today.
On the defense working through the system changeThe character and leadership of
Kristyn Hubbard to step up during a system change to lead the back three and keep a clean sheet in the second half and overtime was great to see. Credit goes to Hubbard, Toles and Kelly for stepping up into a system we hadn't really practiced.
Up Next for TowsonAfter two weeks on the road in conference play, Towson returns to the Tiger Soccer Complex next weekend for another pair of league games. It will be a challenging weekend for Towson as the Tigers welcome in Hofstra on Friday for a 3 p.m. game, as well as two-time defending CAA champion Northeastern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
