Athletics, Sport Management Combine for Speed Networking Night

TOWSON, Md. – In a joint effort between the Towson University Department of Athletics and the University's Sport Management program, a Sports Industry Speed Networking Night was held Monday evening at the Potomac Lounge in the University Union.

The event drew over 50 Towson students, including over a dozen student-athletes, and over 50 professionals. The purpose of the event was to expose students majoring in sport management and student-athletes to various aspects of the sports industry, providing them with the opportunity to network with individuals who are currently working within the industry.

"I'm so amazingly proud of our students and exceptionally thankful to the industry professionals who came out last night," said Dr. Jessica R. Braunstein-Minkove, associate professor, program/internship coordinator Department of Kinesiology at Towson. "It was such a fantastic event and it was so great partnering with Athletics and Career Services on this. I hope to continue to be able to do so in the future!"

Over 50 professionals were on hand for the Sports Industry Speed Networking Night, including representatives from Under Armour, Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Towson Athletics, Towson Campus Recreation, Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens, Factory Athletics, Anne Arundel Community College, Aloha Tournaments, Harford Community College, Leffler Agency, University of Maryland Athletics, Baltimore Redbirds, Sports International Football Camps, Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks, Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, Perry Hall Christian School, Maryland Stadium Authority, Players Philanthropy Fund, Baltimore County Recreation & Parks, Maryland State Parks & Recreation.

"The Sport Industry Speed Networking event was a great opportunity to demonstrate our values of students first and engagement," said Tricia Turley Brandenburg, Towson deputy director of athletics/senior woman administrator. "That includes helping those that participated establish relationships that will benefit them long after their time as students. We were grateful to have partners on campus in our sport management faculty and career services staff, as well as those in the community willing to share their experience and career path."

Students had the chance to cycle through the professionals in five-minute intervals, covering topics from background, major in college, internships held, how the professionals broke into the industry, what a typical day looks like, and any advice or tips for up-and-coming students regarding the hiring process.

"I really enjoyed the event! It was good to see so many professionals take the time to come out," said track and field member Lindsay Pinckney. "I thought that was really cool. It was also cool to see my fellow sport management majors and network with them. Overall it was great event and I hope to be able to come back and be on the other side of the table one day!"

"One thing that surprised me was how much travel and moving from place to place is associated with the sports industry. In order to further their career many of the professionals have moved all over the country to pursue their passion for sports," said men's golfer Alex Church.
