TOWSON, Md. – James Madison's Ron Curry hit a 17-foot jumper as time expired to give the Dukes a 63-61 victory over Towson Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.
The Dukes (14-11, 7-5 CAA) got the ball for the final possession after
John Davis hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining to tie the game. JMU inbounded the ball to Curry who walked it up the court. He then pulled up just before the buzzer and saw his shot hit every part of the rim before falling in.
Towson (11-14, 4-8 CAA) came out in the second half and went on a 12-4 run to take a 45-39 lead with 12:43 to play. JMU freshman Joey McLean would pull the Dukes back within one with a three-pointer from the corner. On the next possession, McLean would hit two free throws to give the lead back to the Dukes with 8:26 to play.
The lead would grow to as many as five before
Mike Morsell hit shot down low and followed it up with a pair of free throws. Curry would convert a three-point play to push the lead back to four with just over three minutes to play. Davis took control at that point as he scored down low, pulled down a defensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws to tie the game.
Davis finished the day with his 11
th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Morsell added 14 points and
Byron Hawkins chipped in 10.
The Tigers dominated the glass by outrebounding JMU, 43-29.
Walter Foster led the way by pulling down a career-best 13 rebounds. Towson converted 17 offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points.
Towson trailed the majority of the first half until going on an 8-0 run to take a 27-20 lead.
Eddie Keith II started the run with a jumper, before Davis hit back-to-back shots to close out the run.
JMU battled back to tie the game in the final seconds of the first half with a free throw, then ended the half by pulling down the second missed free throw and putting it in with four seconds remaining on the clock.
Towson returns to action Tuesday night as they travel to face Drexel. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen live on Comcast SportsNet.
