ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite freshman
Nicole Shakhnazarova continuing as undefeated in singles play, the Towson University women's tennis team had their three-game win streak ended by Navy (10-6) on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers fell to the Midshipmen by a final score of 5-2.
Â
"Navy was just the better team today," Head Coach
Doug Neagle said. "A few points here and there made the difference in the match. Nicole was a highlight for us though, playing tough to remain undefeated in the regular season."
Â
The Tigers (7-5) won two of the five singles matches, led by Shakhnazarova in the No. 2 singles spot. She defeated Navy's
Katie Porter by a final score of 6-1, 6-2 to stay undefeated in singles play this season.
Â
Freshman
A.J. Gomer had Towson's other singles win, beating Navy's
Kristine Rojo 6-4, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
Â
Freshman
Barbora Vasilkova had a tough battle against Navy's
Claudia MacKenzie. Vasilkova dropped the first set 6-2 but fought back to win the second set 7-6 (3). Her comeback fell short in the third set tiebreaker, falling 6-4 as MacKenzie earned the win.
Â
Towson won one of the three doubles matches but it was not enough to earn the doubles point. Freshman
Renate van Oorschodt and Gomer combined to win No. 2 doubles over Navy's
Mikaela Carlson and
Rozel Hernandez, 8-2.
Â
The Tigers will host UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, March 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the Green Spring Racquet Club.
