TOWSON, Md. – Towson scored the final 10 runs of the game to erase a four-run deficit and hand Cornell an 11-5 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. The victory was the third-straight for the Tigers.
The Big Red (6-14) jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the first inning after the first four hitters of the game reached on a walk and three-straight hits.
The Tigers (6-20) got one run back in the third as
Peter Bowles doubled to left center with two outs and scored on
Colin Gimblet's single to right center.
Cornell expanded their lead to four runs after scoring two runs in the fourth, and added another in the fifth.
Towson began its comeback in fifth inning after
Brendan Butler delivered a solo home run to left center.
Colin Dyer followed with a single up the middle before Bowles plated him with a double to right center. Bowles came in to score after Gimblet followed with a run-scoring single through the left side.
The Tigers came back and took the lead in the sixth after Dyer plated two runners with a double down the left-field line, and Bowles followed two batters later with a two-run double into the corner in right field.
The Tigers put the game away in the eighth inning by pushing across three more runs. The two-out rally started with a
Mark Grunberg walk and a Bowles single. Gimblet delivered his third RBI single of the game, and was followed with RBI base hits from
A.J. Gallo and
Richie Blosser.
Garrett Walther (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season after throwing four shutout innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out one. Scott Soltis (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Bowles continued to swing a hot bat this week as he went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs. In the past two games, Bowles is 8-for-9 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs.
Gimblet went 3-for-5 with three RBIs base hits. Buter, Dyer and Blosser each added two hits as the Tigers collected 15 as a team.
Towson returns to action Friday afternoon as they open a three-game CAA series against William & Mary. The series gets underway at 3 p.m.
