TOWSON, Md. – Freshman
Kendyl Scott had five hits in six at bats and drove in three runs to lead the Towson softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State in the Tigers' first games at the newly renovated Tiger Softball Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
After falling behind early in game one, Towson's offense came alive in the middle innings. The Tigers scored two in the fourth and four in the sixth to go ahead 6-1 before holding on for a 6-4 win over the Spartans.
Missy McCormick sparked Towson's offense in the fourth with a RBI single that tied the game. Scott then gave the Tigers the lead, driving in
Dylan Jarvis to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
Towson added to its lead in the fifth inning scoring four runs on five hits. The big blow came when freshman
Shelby Stracher crushed a two-run homer to put the Tigers ahead 6-1. The Spartans scored three runs in the seventh to make things interesting, but Towson held on for the win.
Junior
Ambar Hickman gave up four runs in 6.1 innings before giving way to freshman
Megan Dejter, who closed it out.
The Tiger offense wasted little time coming alive in game two. Towson scored three in the first, two in the second and three in the third to go up 8-0. Behind the strong pitching effort of freshman
Olivia Baltazar, the Tigers cruised to the 8-0 win in five innings.
The win was the first in the career of Baltazer, who pitched all five innings and allowed just one hit and one walk.
Junior
Olivia Yarbrough led the Tigers with three hits, two runs and two RBIs in game two. Scott went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game, while sophomore
Holiday Cahill and freshman
Daria Edwards also drove in runs.
Towson (13-15) returns to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play this weekend at Elon. The Tigers and Phoenix will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday before closing the three-game series on Sunday with a game also starting at 1 p.m.
