FAIRFAX, Va. – The Towson offense struck for six runs in the fourth inning to break open a tie ballgame and send the Tigers to a 12-4 victory over George Mason Wednesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
With the game tied 3-3 after three innings,
Brady Policelli started the fourth with a triple off the wall in center field. A wild pitch scored Policelli, before walks to
Brendan Butler and
Chris Ruszin, and a bunt single from
Mark Grunberg loaded the bases.
Colin Dyer walked in a run and
A.J. Gallo delivered an RBI single to right field.
The fourth run of the inning scored on another wild pitch.
Chris Henze drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field and
Richie Blosser closed out the inning with an RBI single to center field.
The Tigers (10-23-2) added to the lead in the fifth inning as they took advantage of an error to push across two runs. After Grunberg reached on the error, Dyer delivered an RBI double into the left-field corner. Gallo followed by driving in his third run of the game with a run-scoring single up the middle.
That would be more than enough for left hander
Thayer Seely (1-1). The freshman earned his first career victory after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over five innings.
Matt Allen (2) earned the save after giving up just one run over the final four innings. In both the seventh and ninth innings, Allen worked out of second and third, no out jams to not allow a run in the inning.
Tyler Kardas (0-1) took the loss after giving up six run on three hits over one inning of work.
The Patriots (14-19-1) took advantage of a miscue in the first inning to score a pair of unearned runs. They added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Jake Kalish.
Grunberg, Dyer, Dallo and Policelli each collected two hits in the victory. Dyer drove in two runs and score three more, while Gallo drove in three. Policelli and Butler also scored two runs in the game.
The Tigers return to the diamond Friday afternoon as they open a three-game CAA series against Elon. The series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m. at Schuerholz Park.
