BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore
Holiday Cahill smashed her 12th home run of the season to tie the program's single-season record on Thursday afternoon and help the Tigers (29-18) sweep UMBC (21-20) in a mid-week doubleheader. The Tigers won the first game by a narrow 5-3 before earning the second game victory 7-0.
Towson scored five runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning in game one to secure the 5-3 win. The Tigers used two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs before freshman
Dylan Jarvis scored from third on a wild pitch. Senior
Missy McCormick cleared the remaining bases with a three-run homer that brought in sophomore
Jessica South and freshman
Kendyl Scott. Cahill followed with a solo shot, her 12th of the season that ties the school record for single-season home runs.
The Tigers and Retrievers spent much of the game in a defensive battle as the game was scoreless until the sixth inning when UMBC's offense broke open. The Retrievers led off the inning with a double by
Tori Alexander, followed by
Emily Neal who hit a single bunt before advancing to second on a throwing error by
Caroline Reid. A fielders' choice on
Jordan Sanga's bunt moved Neal to third and scored Alexander.
Kelly Lane brought home Neal on a single bunt before
Erin Trnka pinch ran for her. UMBC scored its third run of the inning as Sanga came in on a single by
Toni Santonastasso.In the same play, Trnka was tagged out at home plate for the third and final out of the inning.
Towson responded immediately with its five runs in the sixth inning to keep UMBC's 3-0 lead short-lived.
McCormick gave up just three runs and five hits to earn her 14th win of the season. She struck out 10 batters to tie her season-high for the fourth time. McCormick and the Tiger defense combined for three-straight three-up-three-down innings to keep the Retrievers without a hit until the sixth inning.
Miranda Clark (2-3) allowed five runs and five hits in the loss for the Retrievers. She walked seven batters over 6.2 innings pitched.
Jessica Holte came on in relief action to get the final out for UMBC.
The Tigers took the early lead in game two, scoring a run in the third inning, before using an impressive six run fifth inning to clinch the doubleheader sweep over UMBC.
Freshman
Daria Edwards reached on a catcher's interference call before back-to-back singles by junior
Olivia Yarbrough and Scott brought Edwards home.
Towson batted around in the fifth inning to score six runs and take a 7-0 lead that the Tigers would not relinquish. Edwards led off with a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Yarbrough reached on a fielders' choice and advanced to second on the throw as Edwards was tagged out at home plate. With two outs on the board, Towson used three-straight singles and a fielding error to score three Tigers. Freshman
Shelby Stracher followed with a RBI double and was brought home on a two-run blast by sophomore
Taytum Valentine. UMBC's
Kim Puccio came in on relief action for Holte and immediately gave up a walk to freshman
Olivia Baltazar before Edwards came back up to bat and flew out for the third out.
Freshman
Megan Dejter (8-10) pitched her second career shutout, giving up just three hits for the win. She tallied three strikeouts and did not allow a walk in seven innings. She partnered with the Tiger defense for four three-up-three-down innings.
Holte (13-8) gave up 10 runs and seven hits over 4.2 in the loss for the Retrievers. Puccio walked one batter over 1.1 innings of relief action before
Nicole Casagrand came in for the final inning and tallied one strikeout.
The Tigers will return home to host CAA rival Drexel Dragons this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come early on Saturday to attend the grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting of the newly renovated Tiger Softball Stadium at 10:45 a.m. There will be light refreshments to follow, giveaways and family-friendly activities that will include a moon bounce, face painter and balloon artist. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Tigers will honor their three seniors;
Hailey Balk,
Missy McCormick and
Macie McGeehan.
