Tigers Fall in OT Heartbreaker to No. 18 JHU on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md.Haley Schweizer scored with 1:18 to play in overtime to lift No. 18 Johns Hopkins University to an 11-10 overtime win over the Towson University women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Johnny Unitas® Stadium. Senior attacker Sarah Maloof matched her career-high with four goals in the regular season finale heartbreaker.

Towson honored its nine seniors, who were playing in their final home game, before the contest began.

"It's hard not to feel like things are working against us but I told the kids they have to keep fighting and keep their chins up," said Towson Head Coach Sonia LaMonica. "I feel like we could break through, our seniors stepped up and played well today. I was excited to see Sarah get a hat trick and be in her rhythm and in her groove and she found a way to break through today."

Johns Hopkins (13-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Shannon Fitzgerald scored with 24:45 to play in the first. Back-to-back Maloof goals allowed Towson to tie the game at 2-2 with 21:16 to go in the half. Maloof's second goal was assisted by redshirt senior attacker Andi Raymond.

That assist gave Raymond 200 points for her career. She is the fifth player in school history to reach the 200 career points mark and first since Hillary Fratzke (262 points, 2006-10).
JHU went back ahead 3-2 as Fitzgerald scored her second of the day with 21:03 to go in the half.

Goals from freshman midfielder Emily Gillingham and sophomore attacker Gabby Cha gave Towson a 4-3 advantage with 16: 45 to play in the first half.

The Blue Jays closed the first half on a 2-1 run and the two teams went into the half tied at 5-5. Dene' DiMartino and Alexis Maffucci scored for Johns Hopkins while Maloof completed her hat trick for the Tigers.

Johns Hopkins outshot the Tigers 18-14 in the first 30 minutes of play. Towson won six of the 11 draw controls in the first half. Senior Kelsea Donnelly made nine first half saves to keep the Tigers in the game.

Maloof opened the second-half scoring with her fourth goal of the game at 28:35. Maloof tied her career-high for goals scored with the Tigers' first tally in 16:35.

Schweizer scored her first of the day to pull JHU into a tie at 6-6 with 24:27 to play. Back-to-back goals from Raymond and freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano gave Towson an 8-6 advantage with 12:22 to play. Montalbano's goal was part of a 3-1 run by the Tigers over the first 16:13 of the second half.

Maffucci responded with a goal at 10:35 which pulled Johns Hopkins to within one, 8-7.

Towson pushed its advantage back to two, 9-7 as redshirt sophomore midfielder Michelle Gildea found the back of the net. The Tigers then added to their lead with a goal at 7:08. Maloof tried to pass from behind the net and it hit the stick of the Blue Jays' keeper and went in for an own goal.

A 3-0 run for the Blue Jays' over a 3:47 span allowed the visitors to tie the game at 10-10. Towson looked like it had the game-winner in the final 10 seconds as Raymond scored. However, the goal was waved off for a shooting space foul and Raymond's free position shot went high. The two teams then went to overtime.

Donelly came up with a pair of big saves for the Tigers in the first three minute session of overtime. However, Hopkins won the opening draw of the second half of the overtime period and after a timeout got what proved to be the game-winner from Schweizer.

Towson had one final chance in overtime following a Blue Jay turnover. The Tigers hustled the ball down the field but sophomore midfielder Samantha Brookhart had a last chance shot blocked out of her stick by the JHU defender.

Hopkins outshot the Tigers 14-11 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime to finish the game with a 35-26 advantage. The Blue Jays won eight of the final 14 draw controls in the game and finished with a 13-12 edge in that category.

KC Emerson made 10 saves to earn the win in goal for the Blue Jays. Donnelly finished with a career-high 16 saves, including several on point blank shots in the loss.

Maloof finished with four goals to lead the Tigers while Raymond had a goal and two assists. Raymond also grabbed a career-high seven draw controls in the contest. Senior defender Michelle Dufault broke the school record for career starts as she made her 74th on defense in the game.

DiMartino and Fitzgerald each scored two goals and had two draw controls for the Blue Jays while Schweizer added two goals and two ground balls.

Towson returns to action on Friday, May 1 when it begins its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title defense. The number four Tigers take on number one Hofstra at 4 p.m. in a game played at the University of Delaware.
