Women’s Soccer Draws With Visiting High Point in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the Towson women's soccer team got a pair of goals from two different sources as the Tigers played defending Big South Conference champion High Point University to a 2-2 draw Friday afternoon.

It was the first time in ninth-year head coach Greg Paynter's tenure at the University that the Tigers (0-2-1) tied in the team's home opener, moving his record to 5-3-1 in the first game of the year at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
  • Towson wasted little time getting its first home goal of the season as Emily Marshall blasted a shot past High Point (1-0-2) keeper Alex Persiani in the 10th minute. Marshall skied a free kick from 20 yards out, just outside the penalty box and under the cross bar.
  • In the 28th minute, the Panthers leveled the match on an unassisted goal from Taylor Romano, also scoring on a free kick outside the penalty area.
  • Shooting was close through the first 45 minutes, with the visiting Panthers taking eight chances, while Towson took six. High Point controlled the pace in the second half with 10 chances against the Tigers' three.
  • High Point took the lead in the 70th minute on a Paige Rombach goal, assisted by Meredith Dunker, who slid a pass through the box to Rombach.
  • The Tigers got a chance from Natalia Pinkney in the 75th minute, but the chance was halted by Persiani. Pinkey got even however, taking a long pass from Hollie Garber. Staring down a charging Persiani, Pinkney chipped the ball over the keeper to deadlock the match at 2-2.
  • Shortly after the Pinkney goal, High Point looked to break the tie as Romano sent in a long corner kick. Panther Savannah Stoughton took a shot that got past Sebolao, but a teammate behind her made a stop and cleared the ball out of the area.
  • In the 98th minute, High Point's Lindsay Elsen took a long shot, forcing Towson keeper Taylor Sebolao to make one of her eight saves on a sprawling dive to continue the match.
  • Towson had two great looks at the goal in the second overtime, with freshman Evelyn Neidert getting free 25 yards out, but put the shot just over the cross bar. Pinkney took a shot in the final minute that trickled just left of the goal.
  • High Point took seven corners, including four in the second half and allowed the Tigers just two, both in the second half.

"I think we had a good game plan against a very good High Point team," said Paynter. "The girls executed it and we came out with a lot of passion and that's what we're going to have to continue to play with. I think playing an exciting game like this against a good level of competition we're playing and getting some results and playing better is certainly something that's going to help us gain that little bit of confidence."

The Tigers return to nonconference action on Sunday when Towson hosts BIG EAST foe Villanova. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex as the Tigers see their second BIG EAST foe in the opening two weeks of the season, following a match last Sunday at No. 21 St. John's University.
