Tigers Claim Battle of Baltimore With Win over Loyola

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Running its win streak to five straight, the Towson women's soccer team topped Loyola 1-0 in the Tigers' final game in the Battle of Baltimore. With the victory at Waldron Family Stadium on the campus of Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, Towson claimed the Battle of Baltimore, thanks to a 4-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday at UMBC.

Goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao, and defenders Nicole Nicholas, Marissa Green and Vasthy Delgado were named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament Team.

How It Happened
  • Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Tigers (5-2-1) sustained pressure in the first 45 minutes, earning six corner kicks.
  • One of those corner kicks proved to be pivitol to the match as Delgado sailed in a corner, finding Green's head, who in turn passed it to Bove. The sophomore midfielder headed home the game-winning goal in the 36th minute, the first winning strike of her young Towson career.
  • The Tiger backline, which helped Sebolao run Towson's scoreless streak to 490 minutes, held Loyola (2-5-0) without a shot in the first 45 minutes. The Greyhounds did not take an attempt until the 52nd minute of the match.
  • Towson out-shot Loyola 11-8 for the full 90 minutes, marking the second-straight game the Tigers out-shot their opponent.
  • Loyola took advantage of the win in the second half, while the game was played at a more frantic pace. The Greyhounds took eight shots in the final 45 minute, limiting Towson to seven.
  • Bove was Towson's top shooter, putting all three of her attempts on frame.
  • Sebolao finished the day with two saves, both coming in the second 45 minutes. Loyola's starting keeper Colleen Folan made two saves and allowed one goal in her 45 minutes while Sumer Rahe made two stops while not allowing a tally in the second half.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson ran its win streak to five in a row, the longest winning streak in program history. The Tigers are unbeaten in their last six games, dating back to a 2-2 draw with High Point on August 28.
  • The Tigers bested local rival Loyola for the second time in program history and for the first time since August 20, 2011.
  • Towson improved to 3-1-0 all-time in the Battle of Baltimore, avenging a 1-0 loss to Loyola in last season's matchup during the Battle.
  • The Tigers have not allowed a goal since the 70th minute of the High Point contest, a stretch of 490 minutes, resetting the program record.
Towson Head Coach Greg Paynter
We had a lot of sustained possession and pressure in the first half. We put the pressure on them early and earned six corner kicks in the first half, scoring on one. Natalia Pinkney was really effective at getting around Loyola's defense and our midfield played well.

The wind was strong in our favor in the first half and against us in the second half. Loyola played better in the second half and we struggled to get control of the ball. Vasthy and Erin Kelly had two blocks and Sarah Quick did a great job coming in off the bench.

After nearly a month on the road, Towson returns to the Tiger Soccer Complex on Friday to take on Saint Francis University. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. to open Towson's final non-conference weekend of the season.
