Tigers Head West to North Dakota State Tournament

Road Warriors: The Tigers embark on a 13-match road trip that begins this weekend at the North Dakota State Tournament. Towson will battle the host Bison on Friday night before facing Milwaukee and Utah Valley on Saturday to wrap up the tournament. Live stats and video (for a fee) will be available for all three matches and links can be found on the volleyball schedule page on TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow @Towson_VB for updates on the team.

Tiger Tracks: The Tigers are coming off the opening weekend of the season where they went 4-1 while hosting the Towson Invitational. After falling 3-2 in a tough battle to Tennessee on Friday night, the Tigers did not drop a set the rest of the weekend picking up four straight set victories. Freshman Jocelyn Kuilan recorded a team-high 57 kills to go with 21 digs and seven service aces. Senior Haley Pa'akaula contributed 54 kills, 50 digs and seven blocks. Redshirt senior Aimee Schubert dished out 120 assists while redshirt freshman Anna Holehouse anchored the backline with 75 digs.

Scouting the Opponents: North Dakota State sits at 3-1 on the year after a victory over St. Louis on Monday. The Bison are led by Jenni Fassbender who has 61 kills and 22 digs. Milwaukee enters the tournament with a 2-2 mark and will face Utah Valley before battling the Tigers on Saturday. Kayla Price has dished out 154 assists to go with 24 digs and seven service aces. Utah Valley brings a 1-3 record into the weekend following a 3-0 loss to Idaho State on Tuesday. Lauren Bakker has 30 kills and is tied for the team lead with 16 blocks entering this weekend's play.

Series History: Friday's match will be just the second ever meeting between the Tigers and Bison. The two met last year as part of the Tiger Invitational with the host Tigers claiming a 3-0 victory. Aimee Schubert had 14 assists and 11 digs in the win for the Tigers while Emily Miron had eight kills for the Bison. On Saturday, the Tigers will face Milwaukee and Utah Valley for the first time in program history.

I'm Honored: Freshman right side hitter Jocelyn Kuilan turned in a big performance in her first weekend with the Tigers. Kuilan had 57 kills, 21 digs, seven blocks and seven service aces. She led the team in kills in three of the five matches and had a season-high 18 kills while hitting .773 against Delaware State. For her efforts Kuilan was named to the all-tournament team and earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week honors. Kuilan is the first Tiger since Paige Sekerak (2011) to earn rookie of the week accolades.

Aces Are a Girl's Best Friend: The Tigers wasted little time in heating up from behind the service line last weekend. Towson posted double digit service aces in two matches and finished the weekend with 33 service aces. The Tigers had a season-high 13 service aces in the win over Coppin State. Eight Tigers had at least one service ace led by junior outside hitter Jessica Lewis who finished with eight. Entering play this weekend, the Tigers rank second in the CAA while averaging just shy of two service aces per set (1.94). Lewis leads the CAA in service aces per set (0.53) while Jocelyn Kuilan is also among the top 10 (0.41 aps, 6th).

Double Your Pleasure: Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Haley Pa'akaula and redshirt senior setter Aimee Schubert both posted double-double performances over the weekend. Pa'akaula had 14 kills and 15 digs against Tennessee. It was the 11th double-double of her career. Schubert finished with 21 assists and 10 digs in the victory over Delaware State for her 13th double-double as a Tiger.

Life is Tough on the Road: After playing five matches at home last weekend, the Tigers now embark on a tough 13-match road trip. It is the longest road trip the Tigers have taken under Head Coach Don Metil. It is the longest road trip in program history since 1988 when Head Coach Cathy Cain and the Tigers played away from home for 14 straight matches mid-season. Metil and the Tigers will finally return to the friendly confines of SECU Arena on Oct. 9 when they host Hofstra.

Up Next: The Tigers continue this long road trip next weekend as they head north to Philadelphia for three matches at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational. Towson will face Fairfield and Penn on Saturday before battling Binghamton on Sunday.
