TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team used a balanced attack to earn a 3-1 win over UNCW, the defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Champs, on Saturday evening. Four Tigers posted double-doubles in the win, including freshman
Marrisa Wonders, who had her fourth straight double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers (14-3, 2-1 CAA) took a 6-4 lead in the first set on a kill from senior Jessica Lewis. UNCW (12-4, 2-2 CAA) responded by scoring 11 of the next 17 points and took a 15-12 lead. Maddy Kline had a pair of kills and a block assist. The two teams continued to battle as another kill from Kline gave the Seahawks a 20-18 edge. That kill from Kline was part of a 4-0 run by the visitors that gave UNCW a 23-18 lead. A kill from Nicole Lott gave UNCW a 25-23 set win and an early lead in the match.
- Back-to-back kills from Lewis allowed the Black and Gold attack to open up a 9-5 lead in the second set. A kill from sophomore Carola Biver extended the Towson advantage to 13-8. Junior Payton Windell registered a kill to give the Tigers a 19-11 lead in the set. Three straight kills from Lott pulled UNCW to within five, 22-17. Towson called timeout and after the break used kills from Biver and Lewis to secure the 25-18 set win and tie the match at 1-1.
- A block from senior Lindsay Flaherty and Windell gave Towson a 9-5 lead in the third set. A service ace from Wonders made it 11-6 in favor of the home team. A 6-0 run pushed the Tiger lead to 19-8 in the set. Biver had back-to-back kills and a block assist while sophomore Meredith Dignan added a service ace during that scoring spurt. Three straight attack errors by the Seahawks and a kill from Flaherty sealed a 25-14 set win for the Tigers and gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Trailing 6-5 in the fourth set, Towson used a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. Windell had a pair of kills and teamed with Flaherty for a pair of blocks during that stretch. A kill from sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan extended the Tiger lead to 16-9. Towson took a 20-11 advantage on a kill from Lewis. UNCW took a timeout and used an 11-4 run to pull to within two, 24-22. The Tigers called timeout and used a kill from Kuilan to secure a 25-22 set win and claimed a 3-1 win in the match.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson hit .245 for the match and hit an impressive .395 in the second set (17 kills, two errors, 38 attempts). The Tigers held UNCW to an .092 hitting percentage for the match. It was the 14th time this season, the Tigers have held an opponent to an under .200 hitting percentage and the eighth time the Tigers held an opponent to an under .100 hitting percentage.
- Four Tigers posted double-doubles in the contest. Lewis led the team with 15 kills and 12 digs for her fourth straight double-double and ninth of the year. Wonders had 28 assists and 11 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the year and fourth straight. Kuilan added 11 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Biver posted 10 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the year.
- Redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse had a match-high 21 digs while Windell matched her career-high with eight kills.
- Junior Julymar Otero dished out 21 assists.
- Lott led UNCW with 14 kills while Sydney Alvis added 19 digs.
The Tigers wrap up a busy stretch on Monday, Oct. 3 as they welcome Elon to SECU Arena for a 7 p.m. match. Elon beat Delaware 3-2 on Saturday evening.
