Tigers Snap Streak with 3-1 Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Double-double performances from freshmen Annie Ertz and Marrisa Wonders along with senior Jessica Lewis powered the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Elon University in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action Friday night. The Tigers (20-7, 7-5 CAA) snapped a two-match losing streak while sweeping the season series from the Phoenix (16-11, 3-8 CAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set on a kill from sophomore Carola Biver. The two teams traded points as the Phoenix took a 12-11 lead on a kill from Michelle Klein. Towson used a 7-2 run to take an 18-14 advantage. Sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan had a pair of service aces and a kill during that scoring run for the Tigers. Elon responded by scoring nine of the next 13 points and took a 23-22 edge. Klein recorded a pair of service aces while Kam Terry had a pair of kills during that stretch. Following a Towson timeout, an attack error by the Phoenix tied the set at 23-23. Kuilan had a kill and a service ace to secure the 25-23 set win.
  • Leading by just one, 8-7 in the second set, Towson used an 8-2 run to take a 16-9 lead. Ertz had a block and a service ace while redshirt senior Candace Steadman contributed a kill and a block during that stretch. A kill from Ertz extended the visitors' advantage to 18-13. A block from Steadman and Ertz followed by a kill from Ertz gave the Black and Gold attack a 23-16 lead. Towson went on to close out a 25-19 set win on a kill from junior Payton Windell.
  • Trailing 8-5 in the third set, Elon used a 13-5 run to take an 18-13 advantage. Terry led the Phoenix with three kills during that stretch. Kayla Agae pushed the home team lead to 20-16 with a kill. Elon led 24-17 before Towson scored four straight points to pull to within three, 24-21. Elon called timeout and after the break, a Terry kill gave Elon a 25-21 set win and forced the match to a fourth set.
  • With the fourth set tied at 9-9, Towson used a 6-2 run to take a 15-11 advantage. Kuilan and Ertz each had two kills during that stretch. After an Elon timeout, Towson extended its run by scoring four straight points and taking a 19-11 adavantage. Freshman Sydney Bates recorded her first career service ace during that stretch. Towson pushed its lead to 22-15 on a kill from Lewis. The two teams traded points before an attack error by the Phoenix gave Towson a 25-22 set win and a victory in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson recorded a .147 hitting percentage while Elon hit .162. It was the 20th time this season, the Tigers have held an opponent to a hitting percentage under .200.
  • Towson recorded its 20th win of the season. The Tigers have now won at least 20 matches in each of the last three years.
  • Ertz posted her first career double-double to lead the Tigers. She finished with a career-high 13 kills and 13 digs. She hit .281 and added three blocks.
  • Wonders posted her second straight double-double and CAA leading 17th double-double of the year with 32 assists and 17 digs. Lewis contributed 11 kills and 16 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.
  • Kuilan finished with nine kills and five service aces while redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse recorded a match-high 23 digs.
  • Terry led Elon with 15 kills.

The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Nov. 4 when they host Hofstra at 7 p.m. It will be the Tigers' annual "Aces for Autism" match and fans who wear blue can receive free admission while supporting a good cause.
