James Madison Tops Tigers in Back-and-Forth Battle

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison scored nine of the final 10 points in the fifth set to secure a 3-2 win over the Towson University volleyball team in the regular season finale for both Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) teams. Freshman Marrisa Wonders and senior Jessica Lewis each posted a double-double for the Tigers (23-8, 10-6 CAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was one of the closest of the match as the two sides battled through 10 ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 14-14, Towson scored seven of the next 10 points and took a 21-17 lead. Sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that run. Towson pushed its advantage to 23-19 on a kill from junior Payton Windell. A kill from senior Lindsay Flaherty secured a 25-22 set win for the Tigers.
  • A service ace from redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse allowed the Tigers to open up a 13-6 lead in the second set. James Madison (19-10, 11-5 CAA) called timeout and responded with an 8-1 run out of the break, which tied the set at 14-14. Janey Goodman and Kelly Robertson each had a kill and a block during that stretch. The two teams traded points as Towson took a 22-20 lead on a kill from Windell. A kill from Goodman tied the set at 23-23 before a service ace from Robertson gave the home team a 25-23 set win and tied the match at 1-1.
  • A service ace from Lewis gave Towson a 4-1 lead in the third set and a block from Lewis, Windell and redshirt senior Candace Steadman extended the Gold and Black attack advantage to 10-5. The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth as a block gave the Dukes an 18-16 edge. A service ace extended the James Madison lead to 20-18. Towson used a 4-0 run to take a 22-20 advantage in the set. Lewis had a pair of kills during that stretch. Kuilan had a pair of kills which helped secure a 25-23 set win and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • The fourth set saw the Tigers and Dukes trade points throughout. The two teams fought through 11 ties and four lead changes in the set. With the set tied at 11-11, James Madison used a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 advantage. The Dukes pushed their lead to 21-17 on a service ace from Goodman. A kill from Goodman gave James Madison a 25-19 set win and for the second straight year in Harrisonburg, the Tigers and Dukes were forced to a fifth set.
  • Towson trailed 6-5 in the fifth set before a kill and a service ace from sophomore Carola Biver helped the Tigers take an 8-6 lead. James Madison called timeout as the two teams' switched sides of the court. Following the break, an attack error by the Tigers started the decisive 9-1 run which gave James Madison a 15-9 set win and victory in the match. Taylor Gail had a pair of kills including the match winner during that stretch.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Tigers dropped into fourth place in the CAA standings with the loss to the Dukes. Towson is currently tied with Hofstra in the standings.
  • Kuilan led the Tigers with a match-high 20 kills while hitting .378 while Steadman and Lewis each added 11 kills. Steadman's 11 kills tied her season-high for the Tigers.
  • Wonders recorded her team and CAA leading 19th double-double of the year with 31 assists and 11 digs while Lewis contributed 11 kills and 11 digs for her third straight double-double and 16th of the season.
  • Holehouse finished with a match-high 25 digs for the Tigers.
  • It was a big blocking night for both teams as James Madison had 15 team blocks while the Tigers recorded 9.5 team blocks. Gail led all players with eight blocks while Flaherty had a team-high five blocks.
  • Goodman led James Madison with 17 kills and three blocks.
