No. 13 Towson Powers Past No. 17 Georgetown at Home

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson men's lacrosse team, ranked No. 13 in the most recent Nike/USILA Coaches Poll, powered past 17th-ranked Georgetown 10-7 in the final game of a three-game home stand Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • For a third-straight game, the Tigers (3-0) scored first as Ryan Drenner opened what proved to be a career-best day. Beating his man from behind Drenner scored just over a minute into the game.
  • Two minutes later, Georgetown (0-2) leveled the game as Devon Lewis scored his first of the day.
  • Behind the first goal of Jon Mazza's career, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a 6-1 advantage early in the second quarter. Drenner scored back-to-back goals, notching his second-straight hat trick.
  • Ian Kirby continued his excellent play on the extra-man during the five-goal burst, followed by Drenner's fourth goal of the game. The junior added an assist on Kirby's goal, while redshirt junior Ian Kirby notched and assist on one of Drenner's goals.
  • The Hoyas went on a three-goal run to pull back within two. Daniel Bucaro struck twice, with the first on a pass from Patrick Aslanian. Lewis scored between Bucaro's goals to make it 6-4 at halftime.
  • Hoya longstick midfielder Riley Mann came in to stop the hemorrhaging at the X, going seven-of-nine for the day, including four groundballs. Mann won three-straight faceoffs to end the first half, which allowed Georgetown to keep Towson's offense neutralized.
  • Towson out-scored the Hoyas 2-1 in the third quarter with Mike Lynch and Joe Seider potting goals. Drenner assisted both goals. Georgetown's Corey Parke scored in the final five minutes of the third, which ended with an 8-5 Towson season.
  • Both teams scored two goals in the final quarter, with Kirby scoring at the 14:09 mark on a man-up chance, followed by Seider 10 minutes later with the shot clock ticking. Lynch assisted Towson's final goal, while Tyler Konen hit Kirby with a man-up assist.
  • Bucaro and Chris Donovan scored the final two goals of the game.

By the Numbers
  • For a third-straight game, Towson out-groundballed its opponent, grabbing 27 against the Hoyas' 21. The Tigers won 11 of the 20 faceoffs, with a seven-of-13 afternoon from Alec Burckley.
  • The Tigers are 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2005 campaign. The Tigers have now won four-straight home games, dating back to the NCAA First Four game against High Point in 2015.
  • Towson head coach Shawn Nadelen is now 21-12 in games at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Saturday was the 40th win of his career (fifth year).
  • Drenner is the first Tiger to have a six-point game since Spencer Parks went for three goals and four assists against Loyola on Feb. 18, 2015.
  • The Tigers topped a ranked opponent for the first time since besting Fairfield 8-7 on the road last season.

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers won't have to travel far for their first road game of the 2016 season. No. 13 Towson squares off with local rival, No. 6 Loyola, on Wednesday afternoon.
  • Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex, roughly six miles from Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
  • Towson will be looking to avenge a 15-11 loss at home to the Greyhounds last season.
