Strong Second Half Pushes No. 16 Penn Past No. 17 Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The No. 16 University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team scored all six of the second half goals to secure a 7-4 comeback victory over the No. 17 Towson University women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. Freshman Angie Benson made a career-high nine saves for the Tigers.

THE BASICS
No. 16 Penn 7, No. 17 Towson 4
Johnny Unitas® Stadium, Towson, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers got on the board first as senior midfielder Breanna Hamm fought through traffic and scored her seventh goal of the season at 27:16 to put the home team ahead.
  • Towson (6-2) added to its lead as sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano netted a free position goal at 16:56.
  • The Tigers continued their offensive push as sophomore attacker Jenna Kerr scored off a pass from junior midfielder Samantha Brookhart at 12:36.
  • Brookhart pushed the Tiger lead to 4-0 as she came around the back of the net and snuck a high shot past the shoulder of Penn goalie Britt Brown. That goal came with 4:12 left in the half.
  • Alex Condon got Penn on the scoreboard with a goal with 1:26 remaining in the first half.
  • Towson took a 4-1 lead at the break.
  • The second half saw the Tigers suffer turnover issues. Towson turned the ball over 12 times in the second half and Penn capitalized to score six goals.
  • The Quakers (6-1) were able to hold possession for most of the final 10 minutes of the game.
  • Benson stayed strong for the Tigers in the second half, recording six of her nine saves in the final 30 minutes of action.

QUOTABLE
  • "For some reason we came out pretty flat in the second half, especially on offense and in the midfield," said Towson head coach Sonia LaMonica. "I thought our defense did a good job and worked hard in the second half especially since we failed to clear the ball and get offensive possessions."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson fell to 3-1 at home this year and has now suffered back-to-back losses.
  • Penn improved to 4-0 all-time against the Tigers.
  • Towson dominated the draw controls in the first half, winning five of six. However the Quakers won four of the seven draws in the second half.
  • The Quakers took 20 shots in the game while holding Towson to just nine shots.
  • Brown made four saves to earn the win in goal for the Quakers. Benson had the most saves by a Tiger since Kelsea Donnelly made 16 saves against Johns Hopkins last April.
  • Montalbano had a goal and tied her career-high with four draw controls. Brookhart had a goal and assist with two draw controls.
  • Nina Corcoran led Penn with a goal and three assists while Condon had two goals and an assist.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, March 26 when they kick off Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play by hosting Delaware at 12 noon in Unitas Stadium.
