TOWSON, Md. – It was not the start head coach
Shawn Nadelen was looking for, but the finish certainly was. No. 11/No. 9 Towson men's lacrosse overcame an early deficit against visiting Binghamton, improving to 6-0 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season with a 15-6 win over the Bearcats.
Timely scoring from the Tigers (8-1) attack unit and midfielders, with nine different players scoring, boosted Towson out of its first home deficit of the season. Junior attackman
Ryan Drenner had his second six-point game of the season.
How It Happened- Binghamton (2-5) put the Tigers in a 2-0 hole early as Ben Kocis notched back-to-back goals in the first five minutes. Both goals came unassisted and marked the first time in 2016 the Tigers trailed at home.
- Drenner cut the lead in half with a goal just 42 seconds after Kocis' second marker, but Bearcat Johnny Maher struck in chaos with two seconds left. Binghamton led 3-1 at the end of the first.
- The second quarter was a defensive stalemate as neither team found the goal back-to-back strikes from Towson middie Brian Bolewicki. Drenner had his first assist of the day on Bolewicki's first goal. Halftime saw the game tied 3-3.
- Towson took control out of the break, out-scoring the Bearcats 5-1 in the third. Drenner scored two consecutive markers, both unassisted. Binghamton's Zach Scaduto ended a 20-minute scoring drought with a finish at 8:23 on a Joe Licata pass.
- Attackman Joe Seider got the only extra-man goal of the game as he hammered home a shot. Spencer Parks, who won two Player of the Week honors heading into Saturday's game, had the assist, his ninth of the year.
- Freshman midfielder Jon Mazza extended Towson's lead to 8-4 on back-to-back goals with 4:49 and 3:03 left in the third quarter.
- The Bearcats looked to get their offense going in the fourth quarter as faceoff specialist Dan Mazurek scored in an unsettled situation just 12 seconds into the fourth period.
- Towson responded by running off seven-straight goals from seven different sources, led off by Ben McCarty on a Drenner assist. Matt Wylly got his first of the year followed by Seider's second of the day at 9:58. Redshirt freshman Ian Kirby logged his ninth goal of the season, with Drenner getting his final notch of the day two minutes later. Middie Tyler Konen scored with 3:18 as Cole Robertson logged a goal in his second-straight game at 2:37.
- Bearcat Liam Reaume got the game's final tally at 1:46 in the fourth quarter.
Behind the Numbers- It was a tale of two halves for the goalies; Binghamton's Tanner Cosens made nine saves in the first half, but could not make a stop in his final 23 minutes. Backups Sam Sanko and Eric Fischer allowed two goals and made one stop, respectively.
- Towson got 11 saves from Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List member Tyler White, who made four stops in the opening 30 minutes, followed by another seven en route to his eighth win of the season. Matt Hoy logged three minutes in goal for Towson, allowing one goal.
- Faceoffs were a near split as the Tigers won 12 of the game's 25, with Binghamton winning 13. Alec Burckley went 9-for-17 at the X, with Steven Stillwell winning another two and Zach Goodrich emerging victorious in his lone draw.
- Towson was out-groundballed 26-22, including 8-4 in the second quarter. But the Tigers recovered in the clearing game, gaining the zone on 14 of 16 chances. One of those failed clears was a heave to the other end of the field near the end of the first half. Binghamton went 10-of-13 in the clearing game.
- The Tigers improved to 6-0 at home this season, the first time in head coach Shawn Nadelen's career the Tigers went unbeaten at home in non-league games.
- Robertson has scored Towson's 15th goal in the last two games. It is the first time since the 2004 campaign the Tigers have scored 15 or more goals in consecutive games. Towson beat Furman 15-6 at home last Saturday.
- Towson is unbeaten in nonconference play during the regular season at home for the first time since 1996 when the Tigers went 2-0.
- At 8-1, Towson is off to its best start since the 1990 campaign when the Tigers also opened 8-1. That team finished 11-2, not suffering its second loss until the season finale against Johns Hopkins.
