First Half Outburst Lifts #11 Towson Over Rival UMBC

TOWSON, Md. – Ten different goal scorers and a big first half helped the No. 11 Towson men's lacrosse best local rival UMBC 14-6 Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. It was the fifth-straight season the Tigers were victorious over the Retrievers.
 
How It Happened
  • Towson (5-0), exploded offensively out of the gates as Tyler Young scored just 35 seconds into the game. Sport pink helmet decals in honor of the team's Breast Cancer Awareness game, Towson got two more goals in the first from Ben McCarty and Ryan Drenner, who got a dish from Spencer Parks on the man up.
  • The Tigers got their highest-scoring quarter of the season when Towson scored six times from six different sources. Zach Goodrich got things going, followed by Brian Bolewicki. The latter scored his first goal since March 11, 2014 after a lower body injury last year.
  • Towson scored four more times over the final six minutes of the half, with Mike Lynch getting and assist from Young. Drenner and Parks struck within two minutes of each other, while Ian Kirby scored his first non-extra man goal of the season with just eight seconds to go in the half.
  • The Tigers, ranked 11th in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and the Cascade/Maverik Inside Lacrosse Media Top 20, continued the run with three more goals in the first five minutes of the second half, again from three different players. Freshman Jon Mazza opened the scoring with a Parks assist. Joe Seider continued his torrid goal scoring with a man-up tally one minute later, again with a Parks helped. McCarty got his second of the game with 10:15 to go in the quarter.
  • UMBC (0-3) moved freshman long stick midfielder Jason Brewster to the faceoff, where he helped spark a Retriever run. UMBC reeled off four unanswered goals in a three minute stretch, with two goals from Ryan Baker, and one from Max Maxwell and Drew Borsody. Pat Clipp and Jack Gannon accounted for all four assists.
  • The Tigers halted the run with just two seconds left in the third as McCarty completed the hat trick. Kirby got the first assist of his career on the play.
  • Parks got in on the scored near the midway point of the fourth quarter, helping the Tigers score three goals on its first three extra-man chances.
  • UMBC got the final two goals of the game in the final minute from Borsody and Maxwell, with Gannon assisting both.
 
By The Numbers
  • The Tigers took the most shots so far this year, ripping off 48. The third-ranked Towson defense held UMBC to 19 total shots, nine of were on goal.
  • Towson out-groundballed the Retrievers 35-28 while winning its 10-straight game when leading after three quarters.
  • Towson improved to 32-15 all-time against its in-county rival, winning the last five meetings. The Tigers won their fourth game at Unitas ® Stadium of the season, matching the team's home win total from the 2015 campaign.
  • Behind game-planning from assistant coach Dan Cocchi '03, the Tigers held UMBC off the board on four extra-man chances. Opponents are just 5-for-14 on the EMO this season.
  • Alec Burckley won 14 of his 21 faceoff chances, one win shy of tying his career mark. With Steven Stillwell going one-for-two at the X, Towson won 15 of the 23 draws.
  • Behind McCarty's hat trick, Towson has had at least one player scored a hat trick in all five contests this season.
 
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers hit the road again next Saturday, taking on their third consecutive local rival at No. 13 Johns Hopkins.
  • Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at historic Homewood Field in Baltimore. Towson defeated the then-No. 5 Blue Jays 7-5 in the season opener last season.
