No. 17 Tigers Take Charles St. Battle with 9-4 Win at No. 19 Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – Hat tricks from sophomore midfielder Emily Gillingham and freshman attacker Carly Tellekamp lifted the No. 17 Towson University women's lacrosse team to a respectable 9-4 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (8-2) won their second straight game and earned their first victory over the Blue Jays since 2010.

THE BASICS
No. 17 Towson 9, No. 19 Johns Hopkins 4
Homewood Field, Baltimore, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson and Johns Hopkins traded goals early and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 25:50 to play in the first half.
  • Dene' DiMartino's goal for the Blue Jays at 25:50 was the last one the home team would score until 16:07 of the second half. The Tiger defense clamped down and held Johns Hopkins without a goal for 39:43. The Tiger defense held Johns Hopkins to just eight shots during that stretch.
  • During that stretch, the Tigers tallied five straight goals and took a 6-1 lead with 18:43 to play. Tellekamp and freshmen midfielders Katie Sciandra and Natalie Sulmonte all tallied free position goals during that stretch.
  • That run bridged the first and second halves for the Tigers.
  • Johns Hopkins (8-5) used a 3-0 run to pull to within two, 6-4 with 12:52 to play. DiMartino had a pair of goals for the Blue Jays during that stretch.
  • Head coach Sonia LaMonica called timeout following Johns Hopkins' third goal and the Tigers responded out of the timeout.
  • Towson scored the final three goals of the game to secure the 9-4 victory. Gillingham finished off her second hat trick of the season off a pass from Tellekamp at 11:45. Tellekamp scored the final two goals of the game, tying her career-high with four goals on the day.

QUOTABLE
  • "It was our best display defensively for sure," said LaMonica. "They were all on the same page, in sync and had each other's backs. They kept that through all 60 minutes. They made it hard for Hopkins to get shots and the shots they got were not the best. I'm really pumped on how the zone and our defense from top to bottom played."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The win over Johns Hopkins gave the Tigers a win over all three of their Greater Baltimore opponents this season (UMBC, Loyola and Johns Hopkins). It's the first time since 2010 and just the second time in school history that they have defeated all three of those schools in the same season.
  • Freshman Angie Benson made six saves to earn the win in goal. Caroline Federico made six saves in the loss for Johns Hopkins.
  • Towson outshot the Blue Jays 23-16 and finished with an impressive 12-3 advantage in draw controls.
  • Tellekamp had a career-high five points in the game. She finished with four goals on four shots and an assist. The four goals also tied her career-high. It was Tellekamp's third hat trick of the season.
  • Gillingham contributed three goals for her second hat trick of the year and a draw control.
  • Senior midfielder Breanna Hamm had three draw controls and moved into a tie for third place on the career draw controls list at Towson (Stephanie Howell).
  • DiMartino led Johns Hopkins with three goals.

The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, Apr. 10 when they travel to Elon for a 12 noon contest.
