TOWSON, Md. – It is one thing to sit in the stands and say "Well I could do that" when watching a sporting event. But it's something completely different to get onto the field and do it.
Six student interns from the Towson Sports Network had that opportunity last week as they partnered with Towson football linebackers coach
Jon Schwartz and receivers coach
Mike Moyseenko for the first annual TSN Pro Day.
TSNers Amanda Cipriano (South Brunswick Township, N.J.), Bryan Contreras (Parkville, Md.), Brandon Sacks (Reisterstown, Md.), Christina Billos (Annapolis, Md.), Ruthvik Gali (Hyderabad, India), and Rachel Ederer (Silver Spring, Md.) participated in the TSN Pro Day, which featured both offensive and defensive drills.
Things opened with the L-Drill, which was won by Ederer on her second attempt at 8.7 seconds. Sacks was late to the event and finished five up-downs with Coach Moyseenko running the drill. The TSNers then worked on their foot speed combined with catching skills with Coach Schwartz. Eventually, the student interns were put through the rigors of footwork and finished with a tackle.
"My expectations, honestly, were not very high," said Schwartz of the participants. "…It's been great to see all these guys improve the whole day and listen to coaching and get after it … They have far exceeded (my expectations). I was kind of upset with myself that I didn't make anyone fall going over the bags. Their athletic ability was much higher than I thought it was going to be. And the aggression coming out on the bags at the end of the drills was pretty impressive."
After working on defensive drills with Coach Schwartz, the TSNers were handed off to Coach Moyseenko for offensive work. The first drill was mental preparation of catching a football, in which Moyseenko taught Gali the importance of keeping his eyes on the ball.
The interns were put through catching drill drills, followed by a session on how to throw. The TSNers were put through their quarterbacking paces with back shoulder fades to corner of the end zone.
Capping the day with a 40-yard dash, Contreras set the bench mark for the interns, posting a 5.77 second time, making him arguably the fastest video intern in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
"Their effort was Tiger-football worthy," said Schwartz. "But the rest of it… not even close."
"It would be very difficult, and maybe get people hurt, if they played football for the Towson Tigers", added Moyseenko.
While none of the TSNers are likely to sign a National Letter of Intent to play football at Towson University, it's comforting to know that those shooting the highlights can get down field in a hurry.
