Ross Goes Seven Strong as Tigers Beat Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. – Junior Kevin Ross allowed one unearned run over seven strong innings to pitch Towson to a 4-2 victory in the series finale against Hofstra Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.  The victory gave the Tigers the series victory over the Pride.

How It Happened
  • After neither team managed to score over the first three innings, the Tigers (11-17, 2-1 CAA) cracked the scoreboard in the fourth inning.  Colin Gimblet started the inning with a double to right center.  Brady Policelli moved Gimblet to third with a single through the left side.
  • Chris Henze drove in the runner from third with a single through the left side.  A passed ball moved runners second and third before a balk was called to score Policelli.
  • Towson added a run in the fifth as Jay Sanford singled up the middle to start the inning.  With two outs, Policelli singled to right to make it a 3-0 game.
  • By that point, Kevin Ross was settled into a groove on the mound.  The right hander allowed just one hit from the third through the sixth innings in keeping the Tigers out in front.
  • Ross departed after allowing a leadoff bunt single in the seventh.  The Pride (7-21), 1-4 CAA) managed to score two runs, one earned, after the departure of Ross.
  • Ross' day would conclude after seven-plus innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and four strikeouts.
  • Lee Lawler entered the game in the seventh with two on and one out in the seventh and the Tigers holding a 3-2 advantage.  He would get a pop out and a groundout to keep the Tigers in front.
  • Towson would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as back-to-back walks to Policelli and Henze were followed by a sacrifice bunt from A.J. Gallo.  A wild pitch allowed Policelli to race home with the fourth run.
  • Hofstra tried to start a rally in the ninth with a leadoff walk. Any hope of a comeback would end right there as Lawler got a double player and a strikeout to end the game.
  • It was the second save of the season for Lawler as he did not allow a hit over 1.2 innings.
  • Policelli led the offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, raising his season average to .381.
