Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Second Half Belongs to No. 6 Towson in CAA Win at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Stop if you've heard this before, but No. 7/No. 6 Towson men's lacrosse utilized a second-half burst to out-last the University of Massachusetts Saturday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Towson got a pair of hat tricks to top the Minutemen 11-8 at Garber Field

Towson (10-1, 2-0 CAA) out-scored the Minutemen (4-6, 0-2 CAA) 5-2 in the second half en route to its fifth-straight win in 2016 and fifth in a row over UMass.

How It Happened
  • The Tigers fell into an early 2-0 hole as UMass got goals from Brendan Hegarty and Tyler Bogart, who assisted Hegarty's opening goal. Dan Muller had the helper on Bogart's tally for a 2-0 Minutemen lead.
  • Towson roared back with four unanswered goals, getting a pair from Joe Seider and another two from Ben McCarty and Spencer Parks. Seider's second of the day and 22 of the season came on the extra man after McCarty drew a cross check penalty.
  • Three of the Tigers' four goals during the run were assists as Parks, Ryan Drenner and Mike Lynch had helpers.
  • The Minutemen struck early in the second quarter to cut Towson's lead to one, 4-3, as Gianni Bianchin notched a man-up goal with Buddy Carr on the assist.
  • Both teams traded blows in the second quarter as Tyler Young blitzed by his defender to put Towson up 5-3, but the Minutemen answered back two minutes later with Hegarty's second. Freshman Jon Mazza ripped home his seventh of the season, putting Towson back up by two.
  • UMass ended the first half with two goals from Hegarty and Ben Spencer, scoring just six seconds apart. Hegarty's goal was assisted by faceoff specialist Noah Rak off the draw following Spencer's marker.
  • The Tigers went into halftime tied 6-6, the third-straight game Towson was even with its opponent at the break.
  • A team that knows how to strike quickly, Towson scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half as Seider rounded out his hat trick, followed by Parks' second of the afternoon. Both goals were unassisted.
  • Shane Rinkus scored for UMass off the next faceoff, just nine seconds after Parks' goal, making it a one-goal game for the seventh time. Parks finished his hat trick with one minute left in the third quarter, putting Towson up 9-7 through 45 minutes.
  • Once again, UMass pulled within one as Bogart scored his second of the day with 13:10 to go in the fourth. But the Tigers slammed the door with the game's final two markers from Drenner and Mike Lowe. The latter came in streaking in transition, catching the Minutemen napping on defense as the close defender got a dish from Drenner.

Behind the Numbers
  • After a career outing against Drexel last weekend, Towson's faceoff specialist Alec Burckley struggled. The junior won just seven of the 23 draws while Towson was out-groundballed 25-24. UMass got 15 faceoff wins from Rak on 19 chances. Tom Meyers won one of his four chances for the Minutemen.
  • Redshirt senior goalie Tyler White, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, finished with six saves while his counterpart Sean Sconone made eight stops, including three in the first and third quarters. Sconone failed to make a save in the fourth quarter.
  • The Tigers caused eight of UMass's 13 turnovers. A team that plays with few miscues, the Tigers had just 11 turnovers.
  • Towson picked up its 10th win of the season, coupled with 12 wins last year marks the second-straight season the Tigers have double digit wins. It is the first time since 2004 and 2005 Towson has won 10 or more games in back-to-back seasons.
  • White became Towson's winningest goalie in the CAA Era (2002) as he collected the 30th win of his career.
  • Seider, who was added to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List on Friday, logged the fourth hat trick of his 2016 campaign. He extended his goal-scoring streak to 16 straight games.
  • Towson improved to 2-0 in CAA play for a second-straight year.

Up Next For Towson
  • Towson returns home next Saturday to continue CAA action when the Tigers host long-time rival Delaware.
  • Opening faceoff is set for noon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium as the Tigers host the Blue Hens for Military Appreciation Day.
