TOWSON, Md. –
Holiday Cahill re-wrote the Towson University softball record book with an epic performance for the ages.
Â
An all-purpose predator with a quick pounce and no wasted motion, the junior first baseman became the first player in program history to slug three home runs in a single-game. In addition, Cahill also finished with a single-game school-record seven RBIs. Cahill's awesome accolades helped Towson defeat Delaware 9-3 in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) softball game at overcast and damp Tiger Softball Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Â
Even though Cahill was super, special and sensational, she still received a shaving cream pie facial from her teammates during her postgame interview with the Towson Sports Network.
Â
"Every kid and athlete has a dream of doing something three times in a row," Cahill said. "I never personally been like I want to hit three homers in a game. To have it happen is amazing. However, those three homers don't mean anything if Ambar isn't dealing and my teammates aren't making plays."
Â
A one-woman demolition crew, Cahill attacked and destroyed a trio of pitches with earthquake-like force that featured awesome length and astonishing trajectory. By the time the ball from her final homer landed, Cahill's teammates and coaches as well as parents, kids, pets, friends, alums, Towson staff members and press box personnel were left speechless and in awe of the mighty spectacle they just witnessed.
Â
Her rockets were the centerpiece of Towson's efficient effort that also featured pitcher
Ambar Hickman tossing her 11th complete game and
Olivia Yarbrough becoming the sixth player in program history to reach the 200-hit plateau.
Â
Make no mistake, this afternoon belonged to Cahill, whose brutal bursts of energy helped Towson earn a key weekend series victory as it battles for playoff positioning. It was only fitting that Cahill cemented a sterling show by the defense by recording the final out on a groundball she fielded and then stepped onto first base.
Â
"I've learned that you can hit, but if you can't play defense and you can't pitch, then all of those hits go down the drain," Cahill said. "We were flashing the leather in practice and it felt good. We were playing on a muddy field and each day we came into the locker room looking like we rolled around in a pile of dirt. We were defensively sound today."
Â
