Tigers Advance Past Hobart to Square Off with No. 2 Denver

TOWSON, Md. – If there was any doubt on the Tigers' offense heading into the 2016 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, Towson put those doubts to rest early.
 
The No. 10 Tigers ripped off six goals in the first quarter en route to an 18-5 Preliminary Round victory over visiting Hobart Wednesday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Towson (15-2) set a program and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record for most goals in an NCAA Tournament game.
 
Towson (15-2) advances to Sunday's first round game at second-seeded and defending national champion Denver. Game time is set for 3 p.m. EST on Sunday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
 
How It Happened
  • Hobart (10-7) struck first on a Mark Darden goal just over three minutes into the game, with Chris Aslanian on the assist.
  • The remainder of the first half belonged to the Tigers as Towson ripped off seven unanswered goals from five different sources. Spencer Parks notched his 22nd of the year on a Brian Bolewicki assist. Ryan Drenner hit for his first at the 6:36 mark of the first, followed 29 seconds later by a Mike Lynch goal. Joe Seider became Towson's third goal scorer at 4:55 as Tyler Young fed a pass over, helping Seider extend his goal-scoring streak to 22 games.
  • Drenner completed the fifth hat trick of his season with markers at 2:41 and 2:23 to end the first quarter with a 6-1 Tiger advantage.
  • Seider logged his second of the game just 55 seconds into the second quarter with Ben McCarty's eighth assist of the season. Hobart ended the scoreless drought as Sean Donnelly ended the first half with a tally at 7:22 with Frank Brown on the assist. Towson took a 7-2 lead into the break.
  • The defense shut down the Statesmen over the next 20 minutes as McCarty and Jon Mazza scored back-to-back goals from the midfield. Brian Bolewicki got his ninth on a Tyler Konen assist at 7:18 of the third.
  • Mazza opened his goal scoring at the 1:21 mark of the third with Ian Kirby on the non-extra man assist for a 12-2 Tiger lead.
  • The third quarter ended with a spectacular play from McCarty as Kirby hit him with a pass on the crease. The former was hauled down by his defender on the doorstep, by had the wherewithal to shoot behind the back for the goal at 0.4 seconds on the clock.
  • Drenner got his career-high tying fourth goal early in the fourth, followed by Matt Wylly's second of the year on Kirby's career-best third assist of the game. Mazza logged his second of the afternoon at 11:35 of the fourth with another Konen helper.
  • Just two minutes later, Matt Leonard put away his first of the season on a rare Seider assist, his fifth of the season.
  • Hobart snapped another long scoring drought at 5:13 of the fourth as Bryan Hancock found the cage. Donnelley had the assist on the final goal surrendered by Towson keeper Tyler White. Matt Hoy spelled the redshirt senior for the final five minutes.
  • Gavin Llewellyn and Aslanian logged back-to-back goals a minute apart, with Max Romm assisting the final Hobart tally.
  • Wylly finished with a career-high day on his second goal with 1:07 to go in regulation.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson ripped off 51 shots, the first time since March 31, 2007 the Tigers took 50 or more shots at home since Towson ripped off 63 against Robert Morris.
  • Faceoff specialist Alec Burckley went 13-for-20 at the X while backup Steven Stillwell won one of his six opportunities. Hobart split draw time with J Andrew Spallanazani and Matthew Pedicine. The former won eight of his 14 chances while the latter won a quarter of his 12.
  • Towson's 18 goals were the most for the Tigers in a Division I NCAA Tournament game, surpassing the 16 logged in a first round game against Loyola in 1996.
  • Hobart keeper Jackson Brown faced a barrage of shots, making 19 saves against 37 Towson shots on goal. Tyler White stopped four shots and allowed three goals, while Hoy stopped a pair of attempts, surrendering an equal number of attempts.
  • After besting High Point 10-8 in the preliminary round last season, Towson has now won back-to-back NCAA Tournament games at home as a Division I program for the first time.
  • The Tigers got their first win by 10 or more goals since besting Saint Joseph's 15-2 on March 20, 2011.
 
Up Next For Towson
  • The Tigers head west to take on defending national champion Denver.
  • It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2009. The Tigers are 1-1 in Denver and hold a 3-1 series advantage.
  • Denver is the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship second seed after going 13-2 overall and advancing to the BIG EAST Championship game.
