HARRISONBURG, Va. – During an electric eight-run second inning, the Towson University softball team got RBI hits from five consecutive batters to defeat the College of Charleston, 12-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament at Veterans Memorial Park Friday morning.
Daria Edwards led the relentless Tiger offensive assault by driving in a career-high five runs. She had a two-run double in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Edwards also reached base in all three plate appearances.
With the victory, Towson (37-16 overall) advanced to its sixth CAA Tournament championship game where it will meet top-seeded and seventh-ranked James Madison. This is Towson's second appearance in the CAA title game in the last three years.
How It Happened
- Kendyl Scott opened the game by hitting the second pitch of the contest over the leftfield fence for her sixth homer of the season.
- After Charleston tied the game at 1 following a sacrifice fly, Towson took control of the contest by sending 12 batters and scoring eight runs in the second inning.
- Seven of those runs were scored with two outs.
- Towson had consecutive RBI hits from Olivia Yarbrough, Shelby Stracher, Brook Miko, Holiday Cahill and Daria Edwards during the second inning.
- The inning was also fueled by three walks in which Courtney Johnson, Courtney Reid and Daria Edwards displayed tremendous patience in taking pitches.
- Nicole Stockinger contributed a key sacrifice bunt during the inning.
- Scott, Cahill and Olivia Yarbrough had two hits each to lead Towson.
