Penn Defeats Tigers in NCAA Tournament Second Round Action

TOWSON, Md. – Iris Williamson had four goals to power seventh seeded University of Pennsylvania to a 12-4 win over the Towson University women's lacrosse team in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers finished the season with a record of 16-4, tying the 2012 squad for the best mark in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers and Quakers (15-4) traded free position goals early and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 22:33 to go in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Emily Gillingham had the goal for the Tigers while Williamson scored for Penn.
  • Penn scored back-to-back goals and took a 3-1 lead with 7:42 to play. Catherine Dickinson had a goal and an assist for the Quakers during that stretch.
  • Following a timeout from head coach Sonia LaMonica, the Tigers responded with a goal. Freshman midfielder Natalie Sulmonte notched her team-leading ninth free position goal of the year. That made it a 3-2 game with 7:04 left on the clock.
  • Caroline Cummings scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon with 5:12 to go in the stanza. That goal jump started an 8-0 run by the Quakers that bridged the first and second halves and gave Penn a 12-2 lead with 7:58 to play. Cummings scored all three of her goals during that run while Williamson also tallied three.
  • TU scored the last two goals of the game which made the final score 12-4.
  • Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano had an unassisted goal before picking up a helper on junior attacker Gabby Cha's tally.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Tigers were outshot 22-16 in the game while the Quakers won 10 of the 18 draw controls.
  • Britt Brown made six saves to earn the win in goal for Penn. Freshman Angie Benson made four saves before giving way to senior Alyssa Saxon who recorded two saves for the Tigers.
  • Montalbano led the Tigers with a goal, an assists and two draw controls. Sulmonte finished with a goal and a team-high four draw controls.
  • Sulmonte finished her rookie campaign with 51 draw controls becoming the first Tiger freshman since Hillary Fratzke to record 50 or more draw controls her first season.
  • In her final appearance as a Tiger senior midfielder Breanna Hamm led the team with three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Williamson led Penn with the four goals while Cummings finished with three goals and a game-high six draw controls.

The Tigers lose Hamm, Saxon, Nadia Podo, Emily Roth, Tayler Bowman and Taylor O'Connor to graduation but return their top eight scorers next season and nine of the 10 Tigers who recorded at least 10 points this year.
