TOWSON, Md. – Despite leveling the match in the 65th minute, the Towson University women's soccer team dropped its home opener 2-1 against East Carolina University Sunday afternoon.
The start of the game was delayed by over two hours as heavy thunder and lightening storms rolled into the area just after the starting lineups were announced. The 2 p.m. game began at 4:08 p.m. after two extended delays.
How It Happened
- East Carolina (1-1-0) controlled the tempo early, testing Towson keeper Taylor Sebolao in the opening moments as Lana Spitler put an attempt on goal in the third minute.
- Towson (0-2-0) put its own pressure on the Pirates as freshman Justine Stoner sent in three straight corner kicks in a two-minute stretch.
- The Pirates out-shot Towson 6-3 in the first 45 minutes, with Sebolao stopping four of those chances. Towson did not get a shot on frame in the first half.
- Spitler scored a goal in the 47th minute on a 20-yard snipe to the top left corner. Spitler's goal came just 40 seconds after a shot by teammate Autumn Berry hit the crossbar.
- Following one of ECU's 11 fouls, junior Maddie Bove sent in a cross to the box where it found the head of freshman Elizabeth Coletti. The rookie tipped home the first goal of her Tiger career, leveling the match in the 65th minute.
- Both teams had scoring chances over the next 10 minutes, including an ECU header attempt stopped by Sebolao in the 67th minute.
- ECU broke the tie in the 78th minute as Berry played a ball through the defense that found the back of the net. That marker held up as the game-winner in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Behind The Numbers
- The Pirates out-shot the Tigers 13-7 for the match, with Towson putting three attempts on goal. ECU's Caroline Jeffers made two saves while Sebolao finished with six.
- Towson earned seven corner kicks, including six in the first half, while ECU took five, four of which were in the first 45 minutes.
- Including the 2015 season, the Tigers have played nine-consecutive games at the Tiger Soccer Complex decided by one goal or resulting in a tie. All eight home games last season were one-goal affairs or ties (3-3-2).
