Volleyball Wins Pair to Close Out Alabama State Tournament

 
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Towson University volleyball earned a pair of 3-0 victories over Alabama State and Alabama A&M in day two of the ISTAP Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tigers (4-0) opened the day with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-16 win over Alabama State (1-2). Towson continued its winning ways in its final match of the ISTAP Tournament, defeating Alabama A&M (1-3) 25-4, 25-9, 25-16.
 
How it Happened (Alabama State)
  • Towson used a 6-0 run in the first set to jump ahead 12-7 against the Hornets, highlighted by four kills by Lewis. The Tigers increased their lead to 20-11 on a 5-0 run thanks to three attack errors by Alabama State. Towson would not give up its lead during the final points as Annie Ertz closed out a 25-15 set win with a kill and service ace.
  • The Tigers dominated in the second set, allowing the Hornets to only get as close as 16-9. Lewis led the Tigers with five kills on a 9-0 run to close out the set 25-9.
  • The third set was a back and forth battle between the Tigers and Hornets. Towson used a 5-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with a pair of kills by Lewis. Alabama State responded with a 4-0 run to narrow the Tigers' lead to 20-15. A kill and ace by Ertz put away the match for the Tigers before it was ended on a bad set by Alabama State.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson registered 33 kills, led by Lewis who had 13. Candice Steadman and Ertz each had five kills.
  • Julymar Otero impressed against the Hornets, recording a career-high 17 assists. Anna Holehouse and Marissa Wonders had five assists each.
  • Holehouse led the Tigers with 11 digs while Lewis added seven to her impressive performance.
 
 
How it Happened (Alabama A&M)
  • Lewis led the Tigers' kill effort, recording 16 as Towson finished the match with 35 kills. Lewis added a team-best seven digs as well.
  • Jocelyn Kuilan added six kills against the Lady Bulldogs while Ertz recorded five.
  • Wonders posted 14 assists in the second match of the day. Nur Sher added four assists and Otero recorded three assists.
 
Up Next
Towson heads to South Orange, New Jersey for the Seton Hall Tournament from Sept. 2-3. The Tigers will open on Friday against Canisius at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, Towson takes on George Washington at noon and Seton Hall at 7:30 p.m.
