Turnovers Cost Tigers in CAA Opener

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Towson University football team put up 393 yards of offense, but it was a pair of costly red-zone turnovers in the second half that helped Villanova to a 40-21 victory Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers (1-2, 0-1 CAA) got off to a fast start as Shane Simpson returned the opening kickoff 53 yards.  He later capped the drive by scoring from three yards out.
  • The Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 CAA) responded with a scoring drive of their own to tie the game.
  • The Tigers looked be driving again on their next possession, but a fumble gave the ball to the Wildcats.
  • The Wildcats used the momentum from the fumble to extend their lead to 20-7 in the second quarter.
  • Towson got its offense going again behind the legs of Darius Victor.  He carried the ball seven times for 48 yards, setting up an Ellis Knudson one-yard touchdown run.
  • VU closed out the half with their fourth touchdown and took a 26-14 lead into intermission.
  • The Tigers defense kept the Tigers in the game as they stopped VU on downs on the opening possession. 
  • After neither team scored in the third quarter, the Tigers failed fourth-down conversion set up the Wildcats deep in Towson territory.  The Wildcats would take advantage and add to the lead.
  • The Tiger offense drove into the red-zone again, but an interception ended the threat.  After a defensive stop, Towson turned the ball over in the end-zone again.  This time the interception was returned for a touchdown.
  • Towson closed out the game by putting together an 11-play drive that ended with a Knudson 18-yard touchdown pass to Sam Gallahan.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Running back Darius Victor rushed 22 times for 115 yards.  It was the first 100-yard rushing performance of the season, and the 14th of his career.
  • Christian Summers continued his strong start to the season by catching seven passes for 63 yards.  Andre Dessenberg added five catches for 91 yards.
  • Redshirt Sam Gallahan added two catches for 34 yards, including his first career touchdown.
  • Chris Tedder led the defense with 14 tackles.  Jordan Mynatt and Malik Jackson added seven stops each.
