PHILADELPHIA – Despite taking an early lead in the eighth minute, the Towson University women's soccer team was edged 3-1 Friday afternoon at Saint Joseph's University.
Towson (0-4-1) kicked off a two-game swing through Philadelphia with Friday's game at Sweeney Field.
How It Happened
- It did not take long for the Tigers to get on the board as Natalia Pinkney buried her first goal of the 2016 season in the eighth minute of play. The speedy senior played her shot to the corner as the Hawks' keeper, Cameron Perrott, was playing out to attempt a breakup on the chance.
- The Hawks tied the game in the 34th minute as Dakota Mills logged her fourth of the season on Gabrielle Vagnozzi's assist.
- Saint Joseph's controlled the pace early in the game, out-shooting the Tigers 6-2 in the opening 45 minutes. Of those six shots, three came between the goals, with another two after the Hawks' tally.
- Tiger keeper Taylor Sebolao made a trio of stops in the first half, while Perrott was left without a save on one Towson shot on goal.
- Towson's defense saw two Hawk shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, one of which was turned aside by Sebolao. But Saint Joseph's scored in the 60th minute on Mills' second of the day with the assist to Vagnozzi and Michaela Finneyfrock.
- The Tigers got a leveling chance in the 67th minute as freshman Nikki Logan put an attempt on frame that was saved by Perrott. Towson got a corner kick because of the save but could not get off an attempt.
- Mills subbed back on the field in the 74th minute and less than a minute later passed a game-icing assist to Bridget Galen.
- Towson applied pressure late in the game but came up with just one chance in the final 15 minutes, despite two Justine Stoner corner kicks.
Behind the Numbers
- Pinkney's tally snapped a long scoring drought for Towson this season, halting the dry spell at 233 minutes, dating back to the 65th minute of Towson's second game against East Carolina University.
- Towson managed six total shots, with four of those attempts on goal. Perrott finished with three saves while Sebolao made eight in the cage for Towson. Five of Sebolao's eight stops came in the second half.
- Despite the result, Towson gained four corner kicks against the Hawks' three. The Tigers were called offsides once, the only such whistle in the game.
- Sebolao climbed the record books Friday afternoon. She now has 145 career saves, ranking her ninth as she passed Megan Lumsden's mark of 141. Sebolao is now chasing Susie Blanco for eighth place at 186.
- Likewise, Pinkney moved on the all-time lists with her 13th career goal. She is now tied for 10th all-time at Towson with Kari Cosley's 13 from 1995-98. Tracy Zettle sits in ninth with 14 tallies during her 1992-95 career.
