Tigers Fall to Seton Hall, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Double-double performances from senior Jessica Lewis, sophomore Carola Biver and freshman Marrisa Wonders proved not to be enough as the Towson University volleyball team fell to Seton Hall University, 3-1 on Saturday night in the final match of the Seton Hall Tournament.

The Tigers (6-1) who suffered their first loss of the season saw Lewis and sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan named to the All-Tournament team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set proved to be a close one as the Tigers and Pirates (2-4) battled through six ties and five lead changes. Back-to-back kills from Lewis gave Towson a 24-19 advantage in the set. However, Cherise Hennigan recorded a kill on the next play that jump started a 7-0 run for Seton Hall, which allowed the Pirates to claim the 26-24 set win. Hennigan had four kills during that closing run.
  • Seton Hall took a 12-8 lead in the second set on a kill from Tessa Fournier. The two teams traded points before kills from Kuilan, Wonders and Biver gave Towson a 15-14 edge. The two squads continued to battle and found themselves tied at 22-22 on a kill from Biver. However, a pair of kills from Danielle Schroeder and an attack error by the Tigers gave Seton Hall a 25-23 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • A block from Kuilan and senior Lindsay Flaherty gave Towson an 11-6 advantage in the third set. Neither team could gain the advantage and there was a tie at 16-16. Following a Towson timeout, the Tigers used a 9-2 run to claim a 25-18 set win. Lewis had a pair of kills and a service ace for the Tigers during that stretch.
  • Leading 2-1 in the match, the Pirates opened the fourth set on a 10-5 run. A service error by the Tigers allowed Seton Hall to extend its lead to 17-9. Trailing 19-10, the Tigers used a 6-1 run to pull to within five, 20-15. Lewis and Kuilan each had a pair of kills during that stretch. The two teams battled back and forth before a service error gave Seton Hall a 25-19 set win and victory in the match.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Lewis led the Tigers with a season-best 23 kills and 17 digs for her second double-double of the day. Wonders posted a season-high 35 assists and 13 digs for her second double-double of the weekend. Biver had a career-high 11 kills and 10 digs for her first career double-double.
  • Kuilan finished with 12 kills and seven digs while redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse had a team-high 19 digs.
  • Hennigan led Seton Hall with 16 kills.
  • The Tigers struggled from behind the serving line with 14 service errors in the match.
  • Towson hit .249 to Seton Hall's .230 in the match.

The Tigers will be back in action on Sept. 9-10 when they take part in the Georgetown Tournament in Washington, D.C. Towson will battle Princeton and Georgetown on day one of the tournament.
