PHILADELPHIA – Despite a season-high 10 saves from redshirt senior
Taylor Sebolao, the Towson University women's soccer team fell 1-0 on the road Sunday afternoon at Drexel's Vidas Field for Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.
A call was made inside the Tiger penalty area in the 89
th minute set up a Dragon penalty kick from Vanessa Kara for the game-winning goal. The result was Towson's 12
th game this season decided by one goal or a tie in 13 games this season.
How It Happened
- After a relatively calm opening 10 minutes, the action picked up as Towson (4-7-2, 1-2-0 CAA) got back-to-back shots from Elizabeth Coletti and Evelyn Neidert. Both chances were blocked by Dragon defenders.
- In the 33rd minute, Towson captain and senior midfielder Maddie Bové had a clear look at the goal, but was stymied by Christiana Ogunsami.
- Towson dodged a bullet in the 42nd minute as Drexel (7-5-1, 2-1-1 CAA) earned a corner kick from Joanna Seca. The chance went to the back post where Melissa Lyon headed it into the net, but the goal was called back for a handball.
- Drexel took the final chance of the first half after a foul against Towson's Sam Lotti forced a free kick near midfield. After playing the ball along the ground, a cross was sent in to Madison Dunn. The would-be goal was aimed for the right post, but Tiger keeper Taylor Sebolao came in for a diving save to preserve the 0-0 first half.
- In the 55th minute, Towson used precision passing to work the ball upfield on a counter, with Bové as the final Tiger to receive a pass. The captain ripped a shot but was stifled by Ogunsami.
- Towson had another good chance on offense in the 82nd minute. A cross-field pass forced Ogunsami off her line to play the ball, which then landed at the feet of Madi Lawrence. The Tiger took a good shot but it was halted by Ogunsami.
Behind the Numbers
- Drexel out-shot the Tigers 15-7, putting 11 chances on goal. Sebolao finished with 10 saves, her first double-digit effort of the season and first since stopping 11 on Sept. 23, 2016 at Elon.
- Each team was called for 10 fouls, while Drexel earned seven corner kicks.
- Sunday's game was the first one-goal decision in the series since a 2-2 double overtime tie at Vidas Field during the 2014 campaign.
