TOWSON, Md. - Towson University field hockey sophomore
Paige Zaleppa scored her first goal of the season, but Drexel tallied three second-half goals en route to a 3-1 victory in a CAA contest Friday night at Buckley Field.
Zaleppa, who leads the team with three assists, became the sixth different Tiger to score a goal this season. She now has two career goals after scoring her first career goal against the Dragons a year ago.
How it Happened
- Drexel (6-10, 1-2 CAA) controlled the first half, totaling 10 shots to just one for Towson while holding a 6-0 edge in penalty corners.
- However, senior Emilee Woodall made four first-half saves as the game remained scoreless at halftime.
- All four of Woodall's saves came in the game's first 16 minutes as the Dragons took the first six shots while earning three penalty corners.
- The Tigers only shot of the half came with just over 10 minutes remaining from freshman Valerie Hajek, but went wide.
- Towson limited Drexel to just two shots over the next nine minutes before the Dragons managed three penalty corners after the clock had expired, but both shot attempts were off the mark and the game remained scoreless.
- Drexel found the back of the cage on just its second shot of the half only six minutes in to break the drought before the Tigers earned their first penalty corner of the game a few minutes later.
- Junior Katie McNeel made a bid for her team-leading fifth goal of the season off the insertion from Zaleppa, but it was turned away by the Dragons' Erin Gilchrist to keep Towson off the board.
- Drexel got their second goal five minutes later off a penalty corner which started a span of three goals in 6:35.
- After three consecutive corners by the Tigers led two shots that were blocked, the Dragons controlled the rebound and transition back to offense where they got their third goal of the night less than five minutes after their second.
- Zaleppa finally got the Tigers on the board just 1:56 later as she scored on an assist from freshman Beira Ho with 15:04 left in the game.
- Drexel made a bid for its fourth goal of the half with under five seconds remaining, but Woodall came up with her seventh save of the night to provide the final margin.
