Tigers Conclude 2017 Season Against No. 15 James Madison

TOWSON, Md. - Towson University field hockey sophomore Jenna Johnson scored her first goal of the season while freshman Daniella DeSouza scored her first career point as the Tigers concluded the 2017 season with a 7-2 loss to No. 15 James Madison Sunday at Unitas Stadium.

Meanwhile, junior Katie McNeel scored for the second-straight game and finishes the year as the team's leading scorer with six goals and 12 points.

How it Happened
  • Ashley Gappe scored the first of her three goals just 3:17 into the game on a rebound.
  • The goal was the first of six in the opening half for the Dukes (12-5, 5-1 CAA).
  • After Miranda Rigg scored her 12th goal of the season to give James Madison a 2-0 lead, the Dukes added three more in a span of 2:37 to take a 5-0 lead.
  • With under six minutes remaining, Towson (1-16, 0-6 CAA) generated its first scoring change of the half, earning their first penalty corner.
  • Off the insertion by freshman Paige Zaleppa, McNeel took one touch inside the circle and then blasted a shot inside the left post.
  • The Dukes added their sixth goal with 1:19 left in the half before Towson earned two penalty corners after the clock had expired. However, the Tigers lone shot by McNeel was blocked.
  • James Madison totaled 15 first-half shots with senior Emilee Woodall making four saves before giving way to freshman Molly Santi.
  • Just like the first half, Gappe opened the scoring for the Dukes in the second, striking just 1:14 into the half.
  • Gappe would pick up her third goal 2:33 later.
  • Seven minutes later, the Tigers scored again with DeSouza finding Johnson on a centering pass in front for a tip-in.
  • Woodall added seven more second-half saves while Johnson and Zaleppa each picked up a defensive save.

Inside the Numbers
  • After missing the first eight games of the season, McNeel finished with goals in six of the final nine.
  • McNeel is the first Tiger to score at least six goals in a season since Courtney Branco and Heather Jenney each had six in 2012.
  • McNeel's 12 points are also the most since 2012.
  • Zaleppa finished the season with a point in five of the team's final six games.
  • Zaleppa is the first Tiger with at least five assists in a season since Katie DeFilippo had five in 2011.
  • Woodall finished her career with 552 career saves, the third-most all-time in CAA history.
  • Sunday marked the final game for seniors Lilly Clark, Patrice Groody, Natalie Hack, Baily Kerr, Taylor Kvilhaug, Morgan Lowry and Emilee Woodall.
