Fast Start Helps Towson Roar Past St. Mary's

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team used a quick start to cruise to a 90-57 victory over St. Mary's College at SECU Arena Monday night.
 
In helping Towson extend its early season winning streak to six games, sophomore Zane Martin led four players in double figures with a career best 24 points. Martin's performance was highlighted by a career best five 3-pointers.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers learned they were ranked 23rd in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll. It's Towson's first appearance in the poll this season.

How It Happened
  • After St. Mary's scored the first basket of the contest, Towson took immediate control by scoring 12 straight points.
  • Martin scored nine points in the first six minutes.
  • Towson had six assists on its first seven baskets.
  • Overall, the Tigers had a season best 22 assists on their 36 baskets.
  • For Martin it was his third game of at least 20 points this season.
  • Justin Gorham added 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Mike Morsell scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.
  • Martin and Deshaun Morman led the Tigers with four assists each.
  • Alex Thomas led Towson's defense with six rebounds and a career best four blocked shots.
  • Leading 30-20 with 6 minutes, 21 seconds remaining, Towson finished the first half on an 19-8 run.

  • This is the fifth consecutive year that Towson has enjoyed a winning streak of at least six games.
 
Up Next
Towson will travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland to compete in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic. The Tigers will meet La Salle (4-3 overall) on Friday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Holy Cross will meet Manhattan at 11:30 a.m. The two losers meet Saturday, Dec. 2 at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation contest. The championship game is scheduled for noon tip-off. All four games will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and former Xavier coach Pete Gillen on the call.
