Postseason Opportunity: For the first time since the 2004 season and the second time in program history, the Tigers have advanced to the postseason. Towson heads to Colgate University to face the Raiders in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Thursday, Nov. 30. Scouting the Tigers: The Tigers suffered a tough 3-0 loss to James Madison in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals last time out.
Jocelyn Kuilan led the Tigers with 15 kills, five digs and four blocks in that contest. Kuilan leads the Tigers on the season with 359 kills, 151 digs and 38 service aces.
Carola Biver is contributing 292 kills and 260 digs for the Tigers.
Marrisa Wonders has dished out a team-high 720 assists while
Anna Holehouse has recorded a team-best 557 digs.
Olamide Sonuga leads the efforts at the net with 96 blocks.
Looking at Colgate: The Raiders went 18-10 this fall and are coming off a 3-0 win over Lafayette in their regular season finale. Colgate is led by
Alli Lowe, the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Lowe posted 382 kills, 56 digs and 28 blocks.
Katie Stansbury has contributed 253 kills and 319 digs.
Lauren Sanderson has 1,028 assists for the Raiders.
Series History: It will be the ninth meeting all-time between the Tigers and the Raiders and the first since the 2000 season when the two squads met in the Towson Invitational. Towson holds a 5-3 edge in the series including that 3-0 win in the last meeting.
Postseason Action: The Tigers will be making their first postseason appearance since the 2004 campaign when they won the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. That year they lost to Maryland in three sets.
Killing Our Chances: Towson enters the NIVC Tournament with 1,615 kills this season. That averages out to 14.42 kills per set. The Tigers lead the CAA in kills per set and have posted 60 or more kills in a match seven times this season. This year's squad currently ranks 10th in school history for single-season kills in the rally scoring era.
Sweet Swings: Sophomore
Silvia Grassini has proven to have a strong swing at the net for the Tigers. Grassini leads the team and ranks second in the CAA with a .358 hitting percentage. Grassini has recorded 10 or more attempts in a match and posted a hitting percentage of .500 or better in eight matches this season. She has posted the best hitting percentage by a CAA player this season (14 kills, no errors, 18 attempts, .778 hitting percentage at UNCW).
Can You Dig It? For just the fifth time since the rally-scoring era began, the Tigers have posted over 2,000 digs in a single-season. Towson enters the NIVC with 2,005 digs on the year and averaging 17.90 digs per set. The Tigers lead the CAA in digs per set.
Anna Holehouse leads the squad with 557 digs and is one of five Tigers with over 200 digs this season.
Welcome to the Block Party: Towson recorded nine team blocks in the CAA semifinals versus James Madison. Junior
Olamide Sonuga and
Julymar Otero led the way with five rejections at the net. It was the 13th time this season the Tigers have recorded seven or more team blocks in a match and the Tigers are 12-1 in those contests.
Tiny Tiger Plays Big Defense: Redshirt junior
Anna Holehouse has proven to be a strong force on defense for the Tigers again this season. Holehouse has etched her name throughout the record book this season. Her 45 digs against James Madison set the school record for single-match digs. Holehouse has 557 digs this season, making her the first player in program history to record over 500 digs in two seasons as a Tiger.
In the regular season finale, Holehouse passed
Stacy Humphries for second place on the career digs list at Towson. She enters the NIVC Tournament with 1,635 career digs and needs just 234 digs to tie
Paige Sekerak (1,869 career digs) for the program record.
