Double Overtime Heartbreak

ELON, N.C. – The Towson University football team erased a 17-point deficit in the second half to force overtime, but No. 7 Elon got a short field goal in double overtime to hand the Tigers a 33-30 loss Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.

How it Happened
  • Trailing 27-10 in the fourth quarter, the Tigers went to the hurry-up offense and Ryan Stover hit Jabari Greenwood for 35 yards to get the Tigers into Phoenix territory.
  • The nine-play drive would end with Stover catching a six-yard pass from Jabari Allen.
  • The Phoenix then went three-and-out.  The punter dropped the snap and the Tigers took over in Phoenix territory.
  • Two plays later, Shane Leatherbury caught a short screen pass and went 39 yards for the touchdown.
  • Towson got the ball back with three minutes left on the clock, trailing by three.  Stover started the drive with a 27-yard completion to Jabari Greenwood.
  • The Tigers got into the red zone before facing a fourth-and-short.  Aidan O'Neill stepped onto the field and hit the 31-yarder to force overtime.
  • Elon got a field goal on its first possession in overtime before O'Neill forced a second overtime with a 46-yard field goal.
  • The Tigers were not as lucky in the second overtime as their field goal attempt was blocked and Elon won the game with a 26-yard field goal.
  • The Tigers jumped out to the early advantage as Stover led an 11-play drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal from O'Neill.
  • After the defense forced a three-and-out, Stover and the offense went back to work on their second-straight 11-play scoring drive.
  • Stover found Caleb Smith for 18 yards on third down, then hit Jabari Greenwood for 27 yards on a leaping catch on the sideline.
  • The third third-down conversion came on the legs of Stover as he ran over a defender near the 10 yard line and found his way down the goal line.
  • Two plays later, Stover hit Joe Green dragging across the middle for the 7-yard touchdown.
  • The Phoenix answered back with a touchdown late in the first quarter, then took the lead with a touchdown pass on their next drive.
  • Elon extended its lead on the opening drive of the second half as they needed five plays to reach the end zone.

Inside the Numbers
  • Aidan O'Neill's field goal in the first quarter marked the 13th-straight game in which he made a field goal.  The streak equals the mark set by Ed Kulic.
  • O'Neill finished the game with three field goals and now has 31 in his career.  He is just one shy of tying the record of 32 set by Ed Kulic (1998-01) and Randy Bielski (1976-79).
  • The offense scored on its first two possessions of the game for the first time this season.
  • The 30 points were the most scored in a game this season.
  • Ryan Stover threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns.  It was his first 300-yard passing game of his career and third game with two touchdown passes.
  • Shane Leatherbury caught eight passes for 109 yards and Jabari Greenwood added seven grabs for 130 yards.
  • It is the first time two Tigers had over 100 yards receiving since Christian Summers and Andre Dessenberg at Rhode Island last season.
  • Mitch Boals led the defense with 13 tackles, while Diondre Wallace added 10.
  • As a team, the defense had eight tackles-for-loss.
