Syracuse Defeats Tigers 3-0 in NIVC Action

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Syracuse University earned a 3-0 win over the Towson University volleyball team on Friday night in National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) action. The Tigers completed their 2017 record with a 27-6, which is tied for the third most wins in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set went back-and-forth early as junior Carola Biver gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead with a kill.
  • Syracuse (22-13) used a 4-0 run to take a 9-6 advantage. Santita Ebangwese recorded three straight kills for the Orange.
  • Syracuse pushed its lead to 17-12 on a kill from Ella Saada.
  • Towson used a 5-1 run to pull to within two, 19-17. Sophomore Silvia Grassini had a pair of kills and a block assist during that stretch.
  • A kill from senior Julymar Otero cut the Towson deficit to one, 20-19.
  • Syracuse closed the first set on a 5-3 run to secure the 25-22 set win. Ebangwese had a pair of kills during that stretch.
  • The Orange opened the second set by scoring six of the first nine points and pushed that lead to 10-5 on a kill from Ebangwese.
  • The two teams continued to battle before a 6-1 run pulled the Tigers to within three, 16-13. Junior Jocelyn Kuilan had three straight kills and added a service ace during that stretch.
  • Syracuse pushed its lead to 19-15 on a kill from Amber Witherspoon.
  • Towson scored the next four points and tied the set at 19-19. That run was highlighted by a service ace from Otero.
  • Syracuse used a 4-0 run of its own to take a 23-19 edge.
  • The Tigers scored three straight points and pulled to within one, 23-22. Freshman Camryn Allen recorded a service ace during that stretch.
  • The Orange got kills from Ebangwese and Mariia Levanova to secure the 25-22 set win and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Syracuse took a 6-3 lead in the third set on a block from Ebangwese and Jalissa Trotter.
  • A 3-0 run for the Tigers featuring kills from Otero and junior Olamide Sonuga tied the set at 8-8.
  • The Orange took a 12-9 edge on a kill from Levanova.
  • Towson scored seven of the next 11 points and tied the set at 16-16. Biver had three kills for the Black and Gold during that stretch.
  • The two teams traded points as a service ace from Grassini tied the stanza at 19-19.
  • The Tigers and Orange continued to battle before an attack error by Towson gave Syracuse a 25-23 set win and victory in the match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Syracuse hit .274 in the match while holding the Tigers to a .106 hitting percentage.
  • Towson had six service aces to the Orange's one but Syracuse held an 11-3 edge in the blocking battle.
  • Otero and Kuilan tied for the team lead with nine kills each. Otero added a team-high 20 assists and five digs while Kuilan finished with three digs and a service ace.
  • Sophomore Marrisa Wonders added 12 assists and nine digs while Allen contributed five digs and a team-high two service aces.
  • Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse had a match-high 18 digs. That gave her 595 digs for the season, which ranks third in single-season history at Towson.
  • Ebangwese led Syracuse with 16 kills and six blocks while Witherspoon added 11 kills.

Otero and fellow senior Payton Windell saw their Tiger careers come to an end with the loss. The Tigers return several key contributors next fall including Kuilan and Holehouse, who were All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honorees.
