Offense Explodes for No. 19 Towson in 20-5 Win at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 19 Towson University women's lacrosse team exploded for 10 goals in each half en route to a dominating 20-5 win at UMBC on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore attacker Carly Tellekamp led the Tigers with a career-high six goals and an assist in the win.

The 20 goals scored by the Tigers are tied for the most goals in a game by a Tiger team under head coach Sonia LaMonica.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers opened the game with three straight goals. Junior midfielder Emily Gillingham converted a free position shot before Tellekamp struck for two to give Towson a 3-0 lead with 26:17 to go in the half.
  • UMBC (0-1) used a pair of free position goals to pull to within one, 3-2 with 22:03 to go in the period.
  • Towson scored seven of the final nine goals in the first half and took a 10-4 lead the at the half.
  • During that closing run, Tellekamp struck two more times bringing her total for the game to four goals. In addition junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano had a goal and an assist while junior defender Tianna Wallpher scored her first goal as a Tiger on a free position shot.
  • The two teams traded goals early in the second half. Montalbano had the goal for the Tigers while Carolyn Jamison scored for UMBC. Towson led 11-5 with 25:12 to play in the game.
  • Towson (1-2) won the next draw control and Montalbano completed her hat trick with a free position goal at 24:28.
  • That goal started a 9-0 run by the Tigers to close out the contest.
  • Tellekamp added two goals and an assist for the Tigers during that scoring spurt while Gillingham and redshirt senior attacker Alyssa Ferro each notched a pair of goals. Sophomore attacker Natalie Sulmonte had a goal and a pair of assists in the game.
  • Towson's final goal of the game came off the stick of senior attacker Samanatha Brookhart. Redshirt freshman midfielder Maddie Dickman picked up her first career point with an assist on Brookhart's tally.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tellekamp's six goals in the game were the most by a Tiger since Rhiannon Coogle had six against Old Dominion during the 2013 season. Her seven points in the game were the most by a Tiger since Ashleigh Rohrback had nine against UC Davis in 2014.
  • The 20 goals scored by the Tigers are tied with 2015 squad for the most scored by a Tiger team under LaMonica.
  • Towson outshot UMBC 37-17 in the game and held an 18-8 edge in the draw controls.
  • Angie Benson started the game in goal for the Tigers and made seven saves before giving way to Kiley Keating who had two saves in relief. Ashley Peacock made 12 saves for UMBC.
  • The Tigers have now won four straight against teams from the Greater Baltimore area and six straight in the series against UMBC.
  • Six Tigers recorded multiple points in the game and that group was led by Tellekamp with seven points. Brookhart and Sulmonte each had five points on two goals and three assists.
  • Gillingham had a career-high four goals and matched her career-best with six draw controls.

The Tigers are back in action as they travel to Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 22 for a 4 p.m. start.
