Strong First Half Pushes No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse Past UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md.  – The No. 14 Towson University men's lacrosse team used a strong, six-goal first-half performance to defeat UMBC, 8-6, at UMBC Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers mounted a comeback bid in the second half but it was not enough.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson opened the game on a 3-0 run. Brian Bolewicki got the Tigers started with a one-timer goal from Konen at 14:02. Jon Mazza scored twice in under three minutes, tallying his first unassisted at 8:02. Mazza's second goal came on the extra-man on a pass from Konen at 5:28.
  • The Retrievers got on the board with 1:26 in the first quarter to end Towson's scoring run. Brett McIntyre used a pass from Jack Andrews to get the ball past Towson's Josh Miller.
  • With just three seconds remaining in the first quarter, Ryan Drenner scored unassisted to regain the Tigers' three-goal lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
  • Towson's Dylan Kinnear opened the second quarter scoring an underhanded unassisted goal at 7:22, dodging through traffic.
  • UMBC responded with a man-up goal on an illegal procedure call to Mike Lynch. Max Maxwell scored assisted by Ryan Frawley with 5:50 left in the first half.
  • Drenner scored his second unassisted goal of the day at 3:07 to give Towson a 6-2 lead going into halftime.
  • UMBC used a 2-0 run to cut Towson's lead to two goals in the third quarter. Max Haldeman scored unassisted after a Towson turnover at 12:53, while Mitch Howell scored from Maxwell at 7:13.
  • Joe Seider had Towson's lone goal of the third quarter, scoring on his first shot of the day at 1:14.
  • The Retrievers brought the game back within two at the end of the third quarter as Haldeman scored unassisted with five seconds remaining.  
  • After a long scoreless drought by both teams to open the fourth quarter, Drenner scored his third unassisted goal of the day at 5:19.
  • UMBC's Jason Brewster scored unassisted with 50 seconds remaining to cut Towson's lead to 8-6.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson narrowly outshot UMBC 21-20, marking the fourth-straight game the Tigers have outshot their opponent. Drenner had a team-best five shots.
  • Alex Woodall went 9-16 at the faceoff X while his counterpart, Jake Brothers won seven. It is the fourth-straight game the Tigers have won more faceoffs than their opponent.
  • Towson recorded 24 groundballs to UMBC's 19. Woodall snapped up a team-best six groundballs.
  • Both teams capitalized on extra-man opportunities, scoring on one of their two chances.
  • Drenner finished with a season-high three goals. He has scored two or more goals in all four games for Towson this season.
  • Kinnear netted his first goal of the season.
  • Seider's goal was the 98th goal of his career. He needs just two more goals to hit the 100-career goal mark and become the seventh player in program history to surpass the 100-goal plateau.
  • Josh Miller made five stops in goal for the Tigers, while his counterpart, Ruston Souder, stopped six Towson efforts.

  • Towson returns home to the friendly confines of Johnny Unitas ® Stadium to open a three-game home stand.
  • Towson hosts local rival No. 3 Johns Hopkins on March 11 at noon for its Breast Cancer Awareness game.
