Montalbano and Benson lead Tigers Past Delaware, 8-5

NEWARK, Del. – Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano recorded a hat trick to lead the No. 17/20 Towson University women's lacrosse team to an 8-5 win over the University of Delaware on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Sophomore Angie Benson made eight saves to lead a strong defensive effort by the Tigers (10-5, 3-2 CAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson got on the board first as Montalbano scored off a pass from fellow junior midfielder Emily Gillingham at 28:45.
  • Montalbano added to the Tigers' lead with a free position goal at 12:44 which gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
  • Delaware (7-7, 2-2 CAA) got on the board with a free position goal from Becky Goshler at 6:26.
  • The Tigers struck one more time before the half as senior midfielder Michaela Duranti scored her ninth goal of the season at 5:13.
  • Towson and Delaware traded goals to start the second half as the Tigers took a 4-2 lead with 27:32 to play. Redshirt senior attacker Alyssa Ferro cut through traffic in front of the net and scored.
  • The Tigers then used a 3-0 run to push their lead to 7-2 with 12:09 to play. Montalbano scored her third of the game on a free position goal while sophomore attacker Carly Tellekamp scored her team-leading 41 goal of the year.
  • Delaware broke up the Towson run with a goal from Megan Santoleri with 4:26 to play.
  • Gillingham scored her second of the day at 3:34 off a pass from Duranti, which made it an 8-3 game.
  • Delaware tallied a pair of goals in the final minute of play, which made the final score 8-5.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Tigers held a 22-21 edge in shots and had a 9-5 advantage in the draw control battle.
  • Benson made seven of her eight saves to earn the win in goal. Taylor Carpentier made nine saves in the loss for the Blue Hens.
  • Towson won its 10th game of the season. It was the sixth time in the last seven years that the Tigers have won at least 10 games under head coach Sonia LaMonica.
  • Montalbano led the Tigers with three goals while Gillingham had two goals and an assist.
  • Freshman defender Olivia Conti led Towson with a pair of caused turnovers. That gave her 41 caused turnovers on the season. She is the second player in program history to record 40 or more caused turnovers in a single-season (Hillary Fratzke).
  • Goshler led Delaware with two goals and three draw controls.

Towson is back in action on Sunday, April 23 when it hosts Drexel at noon.
