TOWSON, Md. – Elon University's
Stephanie Asher scored with 2:15 to play in the second half of overtime which lifted the No. 3 Phoenix to a 10-9 win over the No. 2 Towson University women's lacrosse team in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals on Friday night.
In the game, senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart made history for the Tigers. Her third assist of the game gave her 50 for the season and 92 for her career. That set the CAA record for single-season assists and the Towson record for career assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Towson opened the scoring as Second Team All-CAA midfielder Emily Gillingham rifled home a free position shot at 25:55.
- Elon (13-5) scored three of the next four goals and took a 3-2 lead with 19:14 to go in the period.
- The Tigers (12-6) knotted things up to at 3-3 as First Team All-CAA attacker Natalie Sulmonte scored off a pass from Brookhart at 12:35.
- The Phoenix scored the final three goals of the stanza and took a 6-3 lead at the break. Asher and Melissa Birdsell each scored their second of the day during the run.
- Towson opened the second half scoring with goals from junior attacker Jenna Kerr and Second Team All-CAA attacker Carly Tellekamp. Those scores pulled the Tigers to within one, 6-5 with 25:16 to play.
- Elon went back up by two on a Nicole Sinacori goal at 21:55.
- The Tigers manufactured a 4-0 run and took a 9-7 lead with 9:55 to play. Gillingham had a pair of goals during the scoring spurt while Sulmonte contributed a goal and a pair of assists.
- Elon pulled to with one, 9-8, on a goal from Asher at 8:42.
- The Phoenix scored the game-tying goal as Asher laid out on the end line to keep the ball in bounds and passed it to Shannon Horan while sitting on the turf. Horan then beat a defender and tied the game at 9-9 with 3:20 to play.
- Both teams had their chances in the first half of overtime. Sophomore Angie Benson made a pair of huge saves while Rachel Ramirez picked up a stop on the Tigers.
- After the two teams switched ends, the Phoenix won the draw and were fouled by the Tigers. That led to Asher scoring the game-winning-goal off a pass from Sinacori.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson fell in the CAA semifinals for the first time since 2010.
- Elon held a 26-25 edge in shots while both teams won 11 draw controls in the contest.
- Ramirez made nine saves in the win while Benson was credited with 12 saves in the loss.
- Brookhart finished with a goal and a game-high five assists for the Tigers.
- Brookhart now has 52 assists on the season which is a new CAA single-season record. She already holds the Towson single-season record. She also has 94 career assists which is a new Towson school record.
- Gillingham posted three goals for Towson while Sulmonte had two goals and two assists. Sulmonte also pulled down a game-high nine draw controls.
- Asher led Elon with four goals including the game-winner.
Towson now has to wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 7 at 9 p.m. to see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and a chance to continue its season.
