BOONE, N.C. – Junior
Carola Biver posted a match-high 10 kills to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the University of Virginia on day two of the Appalachian State Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season and earned their first ever win over the Cavaliers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set and pushed that advantage to 7-3 on a block. Towson responded by scoring eight of the next nine points and took an 11-8 edge. Junior Jocelyn Kuilan had three kills and a block during that stretch. The two teams traded points and Virginia (2-3) took a 17-16 advantage. A kill from sophomore Annie Ertz on the next serve started a 9-3 run which allowed the Tigers to battle back for a 25-20 set win.
- With the second set tied at 7-7, Towson used a 5-0 run to open up a 12-7 lead. Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse had a pair of service aces during that run. A kill from senior Julymar Otero extended the Towson lead to 17-12. A 6-0 run featuring a kill from Biver gave the Tigers a 23-13 advantage. Towson took a 2-0 lead in the match as sophomore Silva Grassini's kill secured a 25-16 set win.
- A block from Ertz and junior Olamide Sonuga allowed the Tigers to take a 10-4 lead in the third set. A pair of service aces from Kuilan extended the advantage to 15-7. Another block from Ertz and Sonuga put the Tigers ahead 18-10. The two teams battled down the stretch before a service error by the Cavaliers closed out a 25-19 set win and the match victory for the Tigers. Â Â Â
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson secured its first win in five tries against Virginia.
- The Tigers opened the season with at least five straight wins for the second straight season and third time under head coach Don Metil.
- Towson posted a .242 hitting percentage while holding Virginia to an .085 percentage. All five of the Tigers' opponents this season have posted a hitting percentage under .200.
- Biver hit .429 to go along with her match-high 10 kills.
- Kuilan contributed six kills, two service aces and three blocks.
- Sophomore Marrisa Wonders dished out 15 assists while Holehouse had 12 digs and two service aces.
- Sarah Billard led Virginia with eight kills and four blocks.
